Hey, I'm having a filling today and I am terrified! I even get scared at a check up. When you have a filling, what do they do? Could you talk through the steps as I am petrified! I have even been crying over it! Please help me!? X

Hi Lucy,

I was terrified too before my first filling. Like you, I am scared at each appointment at the dentist, even for a check up.

When I am in the dental chair, I repeat to myself: "it is unpleasant but in few minutes it will be finished".

To fill a cavity, the dentist need to clean the cavity using a drill, a probe and a air water syringe. Then, he filled the cavity with a filling (a composite or a silver filling). The dentist numb often his patient's mouth before the drill. If the cavity is deep, a root canal is necessary.

Good luck

Hi,
I would like to elaborate a bit Lucas phobic's answer:
In most cases the dentist will first numb the tooth. Once it is numbed, he/she will remove the infected enamel (enamel which contains bacteria in it) using a drill and water and suction and that can quite noisy. Once only healthy tooth tissue is remained, the filling is being built-up.
Afterwords, the dentist has to check that the filling is smooth and comfortable to close the teeth together with.
Usually the dentist tells the patient how the filling went and might provide instructions for later on.

Thanks guys, but unfortunately you were too late. I ended up, well, I...

I had a panic attack.

If i had seen these responses earlier (Before i went) i would have been a lot more calm. Thank you very much for your help. I'll try not to have a panic attack next time.

Hi Lucy,

I am sorry to hear that you had a panic attack during your last visit at the dentist. I hope that it was possible to complete the treatment of your cavity in spite of your panic attack.

You wrote: "I'll try not to have a panic attack next time". I was wondering if other dental treatments are planned.

No, No. I am not having another filling. I think I had the panic attack because she told me i had to have 2 more fillings whilst i was there, i think that set me off.

Thank you very much for your support! :) x
