Risks of extracting an abscessed tooth?

I've been told that my last wisdom tooth (lower left) has an abscess at the root, so it needs to come out before too long. I was wondering: how does the dentist ensure that the abscess doesn't infect the tooth socket after removal? Isn't there a higher risk of infection or (gulp) dry socket? What can be done to minimise this risk? Grateful for advice!

Not a dentist but I had an abscesses tooth removed. My abscess was quite large and had already eaten into a lot of bone. The oral surgeon who removed it removed all infected tissue and bone when he removed the tooth. They can clean out the socket and since the tooth is the source of the infection, antibiotics can take care of any “leftover” infection as well, if needed.

Thanks MountainMama! That's good to know.
PS. Hope you're seeing some improvement on your implant.
