I am having a root extracted next week. I am on a blood thinner. When do I stop it and when do I start it again? I also get atrial fibrillation and hope this extraction won’t set it off. Is it likely to?

You don't is the normal answer. Continue taking it as directed by your doctor. Hasn't your dentist already gone over this with you? I assume they know you're taking it?

No, there's no reason why an extraction will set off AF.

Thanks for your reply. I thought I had to come off it for 24 hours because the root is well buried and they will be cutting my gum? I don’t know how they do it but tissue over it is complete since I had tooth out in February by my dentist you referred me to hospital to hv root out. He said within six weeks is best or the root grows over with tissue and problem to get out. He did not advise on blood thinner status.

Hospital knows I am taking it they just sd stop taking it after the extraction!

That's odd. The logic is that it's much easier to deal with a bit of bleeding from the extraction site than if you had a stroke because you stopped the anticoagulants.

Hi Gordon, I thought it odd to tell me to stop after the extraction so I am going to ask the question. But I agree with you easier to stem bleeding than treating a stroke. My dentist told me to miss a dose before I go. My doctor isn’t sure. So I am getting lots of different views on this. I know the site might bleed because it is well healed now after the tooth extraction in February and they have to cut through tissue. I am not looking forward to it at all. I thought my nerves might set off my AF. Also I might postpone because I am just recovering from a chest infection and episode of tachycardia in hospital last week and on antibiotics. If I postpone for a bit will it be even more difficult to get out?

Easy one there :-) , no it won't make it any harder at all.

Hi Gordon, I contacted hospital about rivaroxiban and they said if you usually take your does at night keep taking it. If you usually take you dose in the morning take it four hours after the surgery. So will take at night as per usual.

Gordon, I had my root removed. It went fine. No pain. Took about 35 mins to get out. Had stitches and stuff inserted to stop bleeding. No bleeding after! I am glad I had it done. I can relax now until the next time ……..hospital surgeon was great.

Great news, thank you for updating :-)
