Hello again

Without wanting to repeat my story again, had a root canal done on a premolar, followed by a crown and then an extraction as my pain didn't settle.

2 weeks after the extraction, my pain is the same.

Just been back to the dentist, and in the xray he can see that the original root canal filling that went past the root is still in my gum, even though the tooth is gone. He said that the body should take care of it but for some reason it's not, and all my gums are inflamed.

Hes put me in metronidazole and said I will need to see the oral surgeon to remove it if it doesn't settle in a couple of weeks.

The thought of this petrifies me. Has anyone had to have this done before?

(Fingers crossed the new antibiotics work)

Re your other thread, if you went the implant route, the implantologist would likely be happy to do this bit for you prior to seating the implant as they need a clear area to work in.

Maybe an implant is worth me thinking about then. I just feel like I'm trapped in a dental nightmare and i can't see the end.

i think it's the thought of the implant surgery that's really off putting for me. The oral surgeon the dentist is referring me to is the guy that does implants too.

thanks Brit

That sounds perfect then. You need to ask whether they can remove the bit and place the implant post in the same appt or whether they need to get the bit out, wait for healing then do the implant post. There's not really any noisy drilling with implants - its not that scary.

What about healing and pain? Is that any worse than an extraction? I'm such a wimp!

For me the extraction was a surgical one and it took a while to heal up but never anything other than a bit sore. For the post placement in a healed area there was no afterpain whatsoever and I was told there shouldn't be any.
