Hi, I am new to this site but read lots on here but after some advice please!
I will give you some background to try and help. I had a large filling when I was a child in one of my first molar teeth, this fell out before Christmas and was refilled, since then I have had sensitivity. My dentist decided to crown the tooth which was done in December, but again this did not take away the sensitivity.
I therefore had to have root canal carried out which was done on Friday 24th Feb. The dentist said it went very well despite me being very nervous but she felt it had gone well, she managed to carry out in about 30 minutes which I thought was quick but was happy.
Anyway.... since then I have been still getting the sensitivity, different kind of pain to before - it is more if you tap the tooth ie through brushing teeth or eating - I get significant pain but in general day to day I get no pain. There is no sensitivity to hot or cold just the tapping pain which if tap the side of the tooth it is like a shooting pain.
I went in today and she tapped the tooth with one of her metal instruments and she clearly saw the pain and has prescribed me 2 sets of antibiotics for the next 5 days, she said it may just be the healing process but equally I may now have to go and see a specialist.
I am worried re specialist as this tooth has already cost me over £200 (band 3 on NHS) and she told me that root canal at specialist will be £600+, this scares me and I don't see how I can justify paying this for 1 tooth, I told her I would rather she pulled it and she said that wouldn't be a wise decision as its a key tooth and would be visible as its my first molar tooth.
So... what I am after is...
1. Is it normal to have this pain 4 days after root canal as not sure if its just normal and will go away
2. Has anyone had specialist treatment on a root canal that has failed as local dentist and if so what is this like and is it really this expensive
3. What other options do I have, IE can I get it extracted and is it really a problem?
I have all my teeth still and don't want any extracted but clearly I cant live with this pain forever as I cant eat on that side of my mouth. It all stems from this filling that fell out and caused the sensitivity, it is so frustrating.
Please can anyone help me
