Hi, I am new on here and hope you maybe able to help me. I have a deep fear of dentists and all things dental.I only go to the dentist when I really have to as I shake with fear, sweat, panic and have a very strong gag reflex! I also suffer from Fibromyalgia and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome so my experience with pain is quite different than most peoples.
Last year I plucked up the courage to go to my local dentist with a broken tooth as it was starting to affect my eating.Ihadn't been for 20 years due to my fear. Although the practice says they are good with nervous patients this one was terrible! He was in a rush, huffed about my gagging and having to stop for breaks and made the whole experience worse. He said I needed 3 fillings including the broken one. I made an appointment for when I came back from a 3 month trip abroad to have them done.
On the day I was due to fly back, a 30 hour journey with 25 hours flying time, I had a fever and vomitting so had to cancel flight and rebook 2 days later. The next day I had horrendous pain coming from my broken tooth and had to go to an emergency dentist who was very off hand and he told me I had an abscess in the tooth and either needed it removed or a root canal. He could take it out there and then or do the root canal the next week. I said I just wanted to get home and I had a flight booked the next day. He gave me some antibiotics and paracetamol and ibuprophen. Told me not to eat anything hot as it would expand the abscess and I may or may not be able to fly the next day. I got out of there as quickley as possible.
As I am already on anti inflammortories and morphine for my other conditions the prescription wasn't much use I didn't take the Ibuprophen but tnecook antibiotics. The next day I was even worse my face and neck were very swollen, I was nauseus, feverish and in even more pain. It was also Easter Sunday. I knew I couldn't fly so cancelled my flight and booked next one 2 weeks later. The pain eventually went to a bearable level a few days later and I got the flight.
I luckily had my appointment with my dentist the day after I got home, I had tried to change to a different one but they wouldn't let me on the NHS. He was a bit better this time but said I needed a rootcanal or removal of tooth. My ultimate phobia is having a tooth taken out why I am awake just the thought of it starts to panic me. He has agreed to refer me to hospital for a general aneasthetic to have it removed and put a tempory filling in. Unfortunately this has fallen out and I have got to go back again as still waiting for hospital. I am now wondering whether I have made right decision and should I go for root canal instead? I am worried about the post extraction pain triggering my CRPS in my face, at the moment it's in my back and feet. But if I have to sit for long and he is not in a good mood again whether I would cope with the root canal. Which would you recommend?
Sorry this is so long but needed to put the back story. My insurance company won't pay for my missed flights either as foreign dentist didn't give me a note saying I couldn't fly at the time. this was the last thing on my mind at the time!!. I have since asked but the dentist abroad just says he doesn't do them.
