I despise going to the dentist, but out of the ordinary procedures REALLY send my anxiety through the roof. I just found out I have gum disease and need a gum scaling and planing procedure done. It will be over the course of 2 days (tomorrow and Tues) and doesn't have to be done through my whole mouth, but it's also not localized to just 1 spot.
My gums are already really tender from the problems I'm having. I am really scared of the pain this will involve. The dentist said it won't hurt after they numb my mouth, but I don't know if I believe that. Also, I know it will definitely hurt for days (weeks?) afterwards. In addition, I have a very sensitive gag reflex and HATE having the back of my mouth worked on. I'm guessing at least some of the work will be in or near the back.
The first appt is tomorrow late afternoon, and I already feel like throwing up. Has anyone else had this done? Or can anyone give tips on staying calm during the procedure?
