Hi,

I have some dental work coming up under sedation. I was originally having one tooth out but have decided to get another extracted(filling is close to the nerve, dentist anticipates possible future problems which may require root canal and finally extraction anyway).
However for both of these teeth no suggestion of bridge has been given? Why is this?
I am concerned my teeth will spread out etc. and give me an awkward bite if I don't get a bridge?
One is five from the front on the top and the other is a molar 2nd or 3rd from the back?
Wisdom teeth are erupting on both sides where the extraction is occurring so perhaps the space they take up would close any gap?
Thanks in advance

The problem with a bridge is that the two adjacent teeth would need to be crowned, which is not an ideal solution if they're reasonably healthy (if they're crowned already, that's a different story!). In order for them to be crowned, they would need to be shaved down first, which would be kind of sad if there's no real need for it. Also, it's more difficult to floss under a bridge.

So this may be a consideration, and also cost (if it's NHS).

The alternative to a bridge would be an implant but that would be much more expensive than saving the tooth that can be saved with root canal treatment (seeing how it's a back tooth, this would be best done by an endodontist - a specialist for root canal treatment - if you can afford it or get financial support). Endodontists usually have much higher success rates than general dentists for root treatment on back teeth (due to better equipment and advanced training).

Regarding the wisdom teeth, your dentist would probably have a better idea of where they're coming in and if they're reasonably straight - best to ask him/her next time :). See what they suggest!
