I’m having deep cleaning done on half of my mouth tomorrow. I’m terrified, severe dental anxiety. I’m more afraid of the numbing. They had to numb my mouth for one tooth that was infected before and I didn’t like the feeling of being numb. Now it’s half the mouth, not just one tooth, so I’d assume it’s more injections/ more numb? If it was the same amount I could deal with it probably. I don’t want to feel like I can’t feel my throat or breathe, that will give me a panic attack. The hygienist said she can just use numbing gel but I’ve read that it doesn’t work as well because it’s only numbing the top layer? And will numbing gel effect my throat too?

I’ve googled a little too much and made my anxiety worse. I’ve read that if you swallow a bit of either the injection or topical gel it can numb your throat and too much can even cause you to choke. I thought asking here can help me not fear this.

I’m also afraid of the antibiotic gel because I always get allergic reactions, just overall terrified of it all. Allergic reactions or feeling my throat numb. Any advice, info, words of wisdom? Crying all day and debating canceling the appointment but I know how badly I need this and have been putting it off. I don’t want to have worse issues and fears if I don’t get this done. Thank you!

It works fine for a lot of people, try it and agree with the hygienist about a stop signal if things are getting too sore.

The injections for numbing the gums for cleaning aren't necessarily the same as for a filling or extraction, it's possible to keep things a bit more localised so if you discuss this with the hygienist before starting then you might be able to find a compromise.

No it can't. I'm not sure where you read it but it's bollocks.

What antibiotic gel are you asking about? What are you allergic to?

Can I add the deep cleaning injections are small little injections nothing like a injection for filling . I had mine done twice this year and I had put it off for a year due to anxiety of the injection . Honestly not bad at all . Hope yours went well if done already

Hi I had a deep clean using only numbing gel dentist ready to give injections if needed but honestly was just like a very thorough brushing. The injections will be mild not like for filling or extraction.I was scared stiff but really the procedure is simple. X
