Hi all,

Throughout my 20s I severely neglected my dental health. Now in my 40s I massively regret it and suffer from severe periodontitis. I gave up smoking 6 months ago.

I've had one molar extracted and suffer from gum abcesses roughly every 3-4 months. Who knew gum disease is this painful!

I'm at my whits end, I'm tempted to have all my teeth extracted qnd use dentures to avoid this continual mouth throbbing. I have an NHS dentist but aware they will do the minimum being NHS.

I'm really looking for advice. What would people do in my situation? Really appreciate hearing from people in similar circumstances.

Hi Hollieyoung,

having all teeth extracted to avoid continual mouth throbbing sounds pretty radical. I would expect that a dentist may be able to help you get out of pain while trying to save as many teeth as possible. You already stopped smoking, which sounds great. I bet it wasn't easy.

You mentioned having a dentist so I was wondering whether they gave you options? Knowing what needs to be done and what possibilities to get the treatment may be a good starting point.

All the best wishes

Hi there, really sorry to hear that you're experiencing so much pain and distress ?. As Enarete said, going to full dentures sounds pretty radical unless there are no other options.

Depending on your financial situation, you could consider seeing a periodontist (specialist for gum disease) privately to get a good idea of what your options are. It's pretty straightforward these days to do a Google search for them and read patient reviews. If that is out of the question cost-wise, you could try asking your dentist for a referral to a periodontist on the NHS (often, NHS specialists will be based at a dental hospital)?
