I finally started going to the dentist again but I'm still having issues.

I had a small filling done in a premolar which was fine for a month but then on the opposite side of my mouth a large filling fell out and I now need a crown, I can't afford it so I'm having to hold off. Anyway I had to start chewing more on the side of the premolar and I have a missing molar next to it, after that I started getting pain, it lasted a day or so and went away. It now starts and will go on for a week at times on and off then it will stop for 6 weeks or so. This has been going on, on and off since before December, the pain when it starts is so bad!! Like a 9/10 - 10/10 stabbing pain, it's definitely the nerve that's irritated, i think it's from chewing more since loosing the filling even though my dentist said its not. She said its from the filling being on the side of my tooth even though it's small, she said wait and if it gets excruciating she recommends a root canal, I saw another dentist and he said its my gums maybe or pulpitis, and he said relax its all fine, did x rays and sent me home.

I am so scared ill need a root canal, I struggle to sit for long procedures, I'm scared of choking or not being able to shut my mouth of I need to. Is there anyway this could heal up if I could afford to get the crown on my other molar? By the time that happens it'll probably have rotted knowing my luck.

Sorry if it's a bit of a rambling post, I'm tired, been in agony, i don't trust my dentist fully and I'm full of anxiety.

I have PTSD and GAD/OCD and mild sleep apnea, which makes treatment harder.

Hi, I wonder if you could have atypical ondontalgia? I say this because your dentist can't find anything definitely wrong ( well, they disagree) and you have GAD and PTSD. Thd pain comes and goes Are you taking an antidepressant? Sometimes duloxetine/ amitriptyline help with this face/ teeth pain. Obviously there might be dental issues too but maybe you could ask your GP? You don't want to have too much work done without definite diagnoses. I might be totally wrong of course but I have anxiety and face pain ( apart from real dental issues!) ; it could be a factor for you. Take care.

@Maudelsie It is weird because the pain originally started after the dentist was taking about pain. Then weirdly she did the small filling and it was fine for a month then randomly it started hurting again. It could be linked to my mental health maybe but wow it hurts l, like 9 out of 10 at times. I touched my tongue on my tooth and it hurts so bad but that seems weird if there is no decay etc.

I'm going for a pain appointment on Monday, it's really driving me crazy , like torture. Thanks for your reponse.

I'd like to address this bit (regardless whether you in fact need a rct or not): it is possible to handle longer procedures if you have a dentist who is understanding and you communicate well. Even for a procedure like a root canal treatment, there is no need to sit through without a break. You could agree on planned breaks where you would be able to get up and walk around a little bit, rest your jaw etc. Also, a stop sign applies to rct as well, your dentist can always stop.

Thank you. I have changed dentists to a better one but have to wait a month for an appointment. I'm in a pain flare up again since my last one, I went to see my doctor who has said it is possibly TN Trigeminal Neuralgia but she said there is an emotional component for me so possibly A Typical Odontalgia, the pain has changed again so maybe it is. They have prescribed Duloxetine and referred me to Maxillary Facial at hospital. I might still try the root canal.

Honestly this has been one of the toughest things I've ever been through.
