I'm really concerned about my tongue. About 7 months ago I discovered an infection in my gum which turned out to be my wisdom tooth coming through it's just growing at a funny angle and is stuck. Anyways before I found this out from the dentist I went to wash my mouth out with what I thought was tcp, but it turned out to be dissinfectant for toilets (it was in a similar looking bottle) and it burned my mouth. I'm worried this has caused permenant damage to my tongue. The infection is still there because the dentist doesn't want to remove the wisdom tooth yet. I've been to see the dentist several times since the dissinfectant mistake but I've never mentioned it too him cause I'm embarrased about it.

It won't have caused any permanent damage, but the wizzie might well be contributing to your sore tongue. No need to be embarrassed about your mistake, it's very trivial (honestly!) and your dentist is a professional, it's nothing to be ashamed of.

Thanks, thats put my mind at ease. The bottle was labeled antiseptic disinfectant, even had that little first aid cross on. I just figured it was a different brand of TCP. Thanks for the reply.

Ive switched toothpaste, because the aquafresh was really burning. I switched to aquafresh for milk teeth (0-3 year olds) 1000 ppm. Is that ok to use? It seems to be helping a little.

Yes. You could be sensitive to SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate) it's very common for some people to have problems with it and some pastes contain a lot more of it than others, Colgate pastes are quite high in it.

Has the burning feeling coincided with a change of toothpaste by any chance?

A little bit, its looks alot better, not as many white spots at the front of my tongue, still loads at the back. I basically cut out everything that was irritating it. Smoking, drinking, change of toothpaste. Smoking I felt did the worst damage as it was leaving the inside of my cheeks peeling in the morning.

Actually ive just checked the toothpaste we have, its crest and colgate, not aquafresh. Im now using aquafresh for babies.

Is there a toothpase you could suggest is suitable for me?

Made this a Sticky, since it might be handy for others.

Thanks. Washing my mouth with salt water after brushing helps, is that ok to do?

Sure. Only thing is you'll lose the protection of the Fluoride in your toothpaste, you could try using Fluoride tablets, one sucked last thing at night should keep things under control. Can't see them messing with your tongue either.

The sls free toothpaste doesn't seem to be making much difference, how do you know for sure that the disinfectant didn't cause this? And is this common if you have a gum infection? Thanks

Also is there any drugs I can take like anti inflams?

Because the disinfectant would have caused different symptoms, such as sloughing of gum tissue, redness of the tongue and so on, you haven't mentioned any of those.

TBH I think you need to have your mouth checked by a specialist in Oral Medicine, do you have a dental school anywhere near you?

Like a school or university that teaches dentistry? I went to the dentist today and they told me to come back in a week if it's still sore, but this has already been going on for months. It's the same with my wisdom tooth infection, I go in and they tell me to come back in a few months if it hasn't gone away. This has been going on for a year and I've been back 4 or 5 times now and I don't know what else to do.

Yes, a dental school, attached to a university.

Yeah there is what do you recommend?

Hi Seldon Billy & Control your Dog,
I suffer from a sore tongue & Burning mouth Syndrome.
It is not known what causes BMS, it can be stress related, definitely is with me, it can effect the whole of your mouth, lips, cheeks, gums and mostly tongue.
The best treatment I have found for it sounds crazy, but it does work.
Put 2 drops of Tabasco sauce onto a teaspoon full of water, swish it round your mouth for a few seconds, spit it out but dont rinse. It burns a bit, but settles down quickly. I do this 2/3 times a day when I am suffering.
Hope this helps
Leggy.

Yeah there is what do you recommend?

This: I think you need to have your mouth checked by a specialist in Oral Medicine.

What you may have is something called burning mouth syndrome, as described in the post above, but there are a fair number of systemic problems which can contribute to it, which need to be eliminated or treated.

The best person to do that would be an Oral Med specialist, they are fairly rare outside of dental schools, so going to a dental school would be a good way to find one.

HTH.

Nice one I will contact the school. Thanks very much for all your help it is appreciated.

Also leggy thanks for the tip I will give it a try.
