Hi

I have a badly worn back molar due to bruxism (I now wear a night guard every night). My dentist put some composite filling ontop of it to try and save my tooth - no drilling. This made my bite high. For 2 weeks after this was done I got worsening tooth pain on that side with swollen bleeding gums. I went back to my dentist and she polished the filling material a lot and diagnosed sprained teeth. My bite felt a lot better afterwards.
It is now 5 weeks since I last saw her (7 weeks since I had the composite filling added). I am still in pain. I didn't eat on the sore side for 2 weeks like she suggested. Pain reduced by 50%. I then tried eating soft foods on that side and over 5 days the pain worsened. I stopped eating on that side again. Over 10 days the pain decreased to about 25%, so I tried eating a little on that side again. A few mouthfuls each meal. The pain returned a long with swollen, bleeding gums. Again I stopped. I had also noticed that talking was irritating the teeth on the inside so I have barely spoken all week! My teeth still feel uncomfortable.
The past 4 days I have had pain in my gums surrounding the sprained teeth especially at the back. It feels sore to bring my teeth together on the sprained teeth side as my gums feel swollen, sore and harder then normal and the roof of my mouth on that side is sore. The pain is particularly bad when I wake up after wearing my mouth guard all night - I feel like I am squishing my gum at the back trying to bring my teeth together. This is different to the pain before which was very much around the gums of the sprained teeth only and inbetween my 2 top molars which are sprained. I am wondering if I have now caused a different issue in my mouth from only eating on 1 side for most of the past 5 weeks? I am unable to figure out if my teeth are still sprained as the swollen gums are adding to the discomfort in my teeth.
When I have sprained ligaments in my feet before I can take longer to heal than I'm supposed to.

I don't know whether to keep resting my teeth or if I need to try eating a bit using both sides and as my gums flare up just trying to get through it and keep going hoping things will settle? But then my teeth will hurt more. I don't want to make things worse!

(I am flossing daily and brushing my teeth 3 times a day and using mouth wash - no pain with brushing)

Many thanks

I'm sorry, I can't really help much with this. The bleeding gums bit is odd, whether you've strained the ligaments or not the gums shouldn't be bleeding unless there's something else going on.
Are you able to clean the area effectively since the composite build ups were done?

Trying to sort out occlusal issues (which is what you've got) is very difficult in a few cases, there are a few stories in here where it's taken months and a lot of work to get things into some kind of balance.

@Gordon thank you very much for your reply. As far as I'm aware I am cleaning my teeth just fine - I don't notice an issue flossing or brushing. The sprained teeth are above where the composite build up was done. Gum only bleeds when pain is very bad from using the sprained teeth. They can bleed one day because I used the teeth a bit, be very painful in the evening, I will floss and clean my teeth as normal, bleeding will subside if I stop eating on that side within 24 hours but pain will continue.
