Hi everyone,
Posting on here to get some support and to maybe hear success stories from others in similar situations!
I’m 24 and was recently diagnosed with Stage III Grade C periodontitis after having ignored bleeding gums for a while (maybe 5 years). I finally went the dentist after putting it off due lack of education about gum health/self esteem issues, but was really shocked to learn about the extent of bone loss (generalised 15-25%, around 35% in upper molars)
I’m now starting to get treatment and have my second periodontist session this week. I’m also scheduled with a Prosthedontist to look into a bite guard because I apparently have issues with teeth grinding that is making the situation worse.
I know getting treatment is a really important step, but I’m very concerned about my long-term prognosis given my age and exacerbating factors (grinding, stress issues). This is especially because I’m currently training to be a professional classical singer and so obviously retaining teeth is important for that!
I’d really like to hear experiences from others about managing this condition long term - were you able to stop the disease progressing for decades? What rate of tooth loss have you seen during treatment? I’d be interested in hearing from people who have lost teeth to this condition about whether they were able to get implants/snap in dentures? Being a singer means that I’d really need to avoid removable dentures if possible because they often cover the soft palate.
I’m coming to terms with the fact that I may lose teeth at some point, but I’d really like to keep as many as possible before I reach 60. Is there any chance of that?
Thanks in advance
