Hi All

I just want to write a success story about someone I recommended to my dentist  ;D This fella (who I'll call H) is a colleague, and has a lot of hang ups about things, and as he works with all females  ;) we're into 'mothering' big time.

I emailed my lovely dentist to ask if H could come with me to my checkup and meet him before even making an appointment. My dentist (I'll call him E) emailed back immediately and said that spectators are always welcome!!! Well, he came along, and liked E immediately, so made an apointment for a checkup of his own. His fears are mainly to do with loss of control, especially laying back and feeling trapped. He was a bit unhappy that the surgery is an interior one, but E promised he would leave the door open so that he would have an escape route!  This is the funny bit, while I was trying to overcome my fear I would have been horrified at the thought of the door being open, [smiley=scared.gif] which just goes to show that what suits one person certainly doesn't suit another. A case of 'one size does not fit all' :P

The day came for H's appointment, and he wanted to go on his own, as he felt that anyone else there might prevent his escape. I was just as nervous (well, maybe not ;D) wondering how they would both get on. H was totally overwhelmed by E's calm demeanour and compassion, and coped ok with laying back for the inspection. However, E did say that he didn't feel able to carry out treatment (H needed a filling) with the chair upright, as he felt it would compromise his ability. He stressed that at anytime he would stop and raise the chair on the hand raised signal, and even suggested trying it out a few times to prove it. I was so worried in the 2 weeks before H's appointment that I had done the wrong thing in recommending E, and obviously H was VERY stressed as well [smiley=scared.gif]

It was a great success! [smiley=jumping.gif] H was delighted with his perfectly matched composite filling, (he'd not had any fillings as an adult) AND he even said that he felt he had got over his fear of laying back [smiley=notworthy.gif]. Still has lots of other issues, but what a result!

When I went to see E he asked after H, and was so chuffed when I told him he was no longer fearful of laying back. I said to E how satisfying it must be for him to help someone overcome their phobia like that. He is such an understanding (and modest) man, and commented that although H will be terrifed again in 6 months time, he will gradually add to the trust which is already there in the relationship, knowing that he's not going to be held down against his will [smiley=frightened.gif]

The other point I wanted to make is that H had always been to dentists who allowed him to sit up, and in fact the reason he needed a filling was that his last dentist had performed an unsatisfactory filling which had subsequently fallen out, possibly because she was working in a difficult manner. I am so glad that E had the confidence to help H accept treatment laying down, and that H had the guts to go through with it.

Phew, sucess all round  [smiley=jumping.gif]

Hope this story helps someone  [smiley=grouphug.gif]
