Temporary filling for a cracked tooth

I cracked my tooth and it needs a crown, but I have to wait 6 months because of my insurance. My dentist said it's better to get a temporary filling instead of just leaving the tooth as is. Is this true?

If so, what is involved with the filling procedure?

Depends on what kind of fracture and what kind of temp. You'd get better answers from your dentist.
