Hi can anyone please help me, I am a 23 year old female victim of neglect and physical domestic abuse. I was neglected as a child then got into an abusive relationship where 2 of my teeth were knocked out and another nerve died due to damage which is now undergoing root canal treatment. My dentist has re done the roof canal 3 times and placed a temp filling each time but the access will still not go. This tooth is on my upper jaw next to my canine, first pre molar I believe. My dentist cannot understand why and is going to refer me to a hospital, I'm in the uk, but I'm terrified about loosing this tooth, I am genuinely becoming suicide

Upper premolars can be sneaky, they've got skinny wee roots, sometimes 1, sometimes 2 with up to 3 tiny little nerve canals in them.

Hopefully the specialist at the dental hospital will be able to get in with a microscope, find all the canals and sort it out.

Don't give up hope yet!

Thank you for your reply, I am extremely nervous I have been told that it could be a long wait until I am able to be seen at the hospital and worried about what this could mean for that tooth and my other teeth as I have been told not to chew on the side with the root canal. I also clench due to stress and cannot yet afford a mouth guard so am worried about additional pressure on those teeth.

Also I believe this abscess has been there since February my dentist did not at first believe me as she couldn't feel the lump I was complaining about, what could this mean for my general health having an abscess for this long?

Sorry for my long list of questions but I am also worried that my dentist has never given me any antibiotics just performed the root canal precedure, is this normal?

Just a note to let you know that I am currently treating the adult child from a marriage where the dad left early and the mom developed emotional issues and he was neglected for 20 years. Now has 1/2 of his teeth decayed away along with a history of very painful dental tx and he has severe social anxiety disorder. Sounds bad but he likes me fine and we are on a very good path to dental health with nice aesthetics. I think his social anxiety will improve based on just getting over his terrible dental disease and fear. Yes he will also see a therapist. Just remember that the past problems aren't your fault

Hi, antibiotics are only prescribed if there is an acute (as opposed to a chronic) abscess. The key signs and symptoms of an acute abscess are:

• Pain
• Swelling of the gum, face or neck
• Fever

It sounds from your description as if you're dealing with a chronic abscess, rather than an acute one.

It's ok to leave a chronic abscess while you're waiting to be seen at the hospital :). Your general health should not be affected. You should see your dentist though if your symptoms turn into those of an acute abscess.

Keeping my fingers crossed that the specialist will be able to sort this tooth for you
