I have to have my wisdom teeth removed and am doing okay with the thought of the procedure, but am absolutely terrified over sitting in the oral surgery chair. It makes me queasy just looking at the chair with the arm board for the IV, I didn’t even sit in it for my consultation. Not to mention all of the surgery machines around you.

I’m not afraid to get the IV, but it looks like a torture chair and I can’t get over it. Anyone have tips on how to deal with the environment of an oral surgeon room?

Hi there,

those are some strong associations that you have when thinking of the chair, but I think not too unusual. Is seeing chairs or medical settings something that usually makes you feel uncomfortable?

What can sometimes help is to get some explanations and a chance to see all the things before you need to get the procedure done. Any chance on sharing your fears with the staff and asking them for a round of explanations on what all the things are for and having a look at it? Also, maybe they can adjust something for you to make you feel more comfortable or safe? Also, is sedation in this chair necessary or are there any other options that would be less scary for you?

Update: I decided to get a second opinion from another surgeon (not that I thought the diagnosis would be different, I still knew I would need them removed), but I’m SO glad I did! That surgeon was worlds better and although still very frightened, it was definitely a better doctor for me to get through the process.
