Had a very traumatic experience at an emergency dentist 2o years ago has left me terrified. I had little or no dental treatment as a child so have horrible wonky teeth and not having any dental work done when i was young did not prepare me for what was to come. I am now 47 and feeling helpless. I broke a back tooth months ago which broke again christmas day ignored it best i could until 27th december by which time pain was so severe i could have happily chopped my head off. Got to a dentist shaking with legs that were really not cooperating at all. Managed to get in chair have x rays done and was told tooth rotten had to come out. After 7 capsules of numbing stuff not working kept injecting still not working trying to pull it out digging round it felt everything for over an hour tooth not budged whats so ever. Packed off with antibiotics told infection in tooth. I have now got exposed nerves and roots. AGONY. Taken antibiotics not done anything. I no wimp gave birth to five children all natural no pain relief but i was reaching for painkillers in minutes. Dentist told me come back on 3rd she have another go ...NO CHANCE LOVE..:shame: I rang over 50 dentist numbers in last 2 days to try get iv sedation to no avail in desperation phoned 111 sent me to emergency nhs dentist who was no help what so ever rude and un sympathetic told me he probably couldn't get it out as it was unstable tooth but he drill it for me but wouldnt be able to numb it as it clearly doesn't work on me...NO CHANCE LOVE:shame: Before trip this morning i got a 5mg diazepam tablet from doc did absolutely nothing to me yet i have never took any calming drugs or any kind in my life dont drink etc ..Is this ever going to end even if i can find a dentist willing to sedate me is it going to work do i have to let infection take over so they will admit me and do it as an emergency  anyone out there like me

Hello and :welcome: sorry to hear you are having issues.

There are a number of reasons that you are having problems getting numb, one of the most usual ones is that having an infection in a tooth makes the local amaesthetic less effective ("hot" tooth) which is generally why a dentist will prescribe antibiotics before attempting to work on a badly infected tooth. Have you taken the full course of antibiotics yet, you may well find that once the infection is a bit more under control things are much easier.

Another thing that can affect numbness is the individual patients physiology and also how nervous they are can sometimes be a factor. Also the technique used by the dentist to get you numb (some are better than others). One thing is for sure there will definitely be a way to get you sorted with as little discomfort as possible (sounds like the dentists you have seen so far haven't been the best from a bedside manner perspective).

Is it possible to get a referral from the dentist to the Oral Surgery department at your local hospital? these places are generally very well staffed and equipped and are very used to dealing with issues like the one you have described.

Very much hope you can get sorted soon.

Kind Regards

I'm sorry to hear your still in pain. If the tooth is infected a lot of times they wait until you have had a round of antibiotics. It sucks. I don't think there is anything that could drive a person insane quicker than a tooth ache. Only once in my 20's was I not able to be fully numbed and the dentist told me he couldn't legally give me anymore locals and I don't do well on gas, so I told him to just pull the darn thing. Yes - it hurt, but I was grin and bare it and then relief.

If you decide to go back (and I hope you do) I would search for an oral surgeon based on the personal reviews if possible. It's a shame that good dentists/dr's are hard to find.

Rang 39 dentists this morning now bank holidays over for iv sedation 26 don't do it anymore but haven't updated their pages what they don't tell you is they wont give you sedation without at least a week between seeing you and doing sedation which is not even the problem earliest appointment for sedation was 6 weeks in a 60 mile distance. One would assume that if your that afraid of dentists or have any kind of resistance to any calming drug of any kind you wouldn't be asking for anyway but not for an emergency. Out of options now. What i find annoying is everyone quoting cost at me on the phone I DONT CARE its going cost me a lot more to have time off work. Its nice to know humans get treated worse than animals. Dog had tooth problem straight in knocked out pain killers job done. Maybe i should ring vets

6 weeks!! I'm so sorry you're not finding any help. I could understand a week if they needed to do blood work for IV sedation but 6? Don't give up hope yet, are there any dental schools in the area you could try?

I wonder if your regular Dr. not dentist could give you a strong tranquilizer to knock you out so you could bypass the IV? You would need a driver of course, but it could be worth a shot?

Wishing you good luck - keep us posted.

tried pill doc gave me did absolutely nothing 5mg diazepam never took anything like that in my life was sat there waiting for the big bang and nothing happened i must be alien or something. Thanks for the advice though. I give up now i just live with it getting used to pain now i sure it will rot over time and fall out eventually.

You probably need a higher dose but they hate giving these out as addictive
I'm the same as you terrified they don't do IV here and I needs lots dental treatment :(

I did it

I found a dentist who was amazing

I bit the bullet no sedation no nothing so here follows the review i left him on google so anyone in my area that is same as me go to this place smile oral care Peterborough. Private only but I would have paid triple what I was charged.

In a word Amazing! Complete dental phobic went to 2 dentists in last week who could not remove tooth . I rang this practice this morning the receptionist Carol was delightful calming and generally best receptionist I have spoken to in my life. This is what made me brave enough to walk through the door. The dentist Martin was the nicest dentist I have ever met in 47 years. Martin was patient with me (I was a wreck) gave me a feeling of trust I have never had with a dentist before ever. He explained everything to me calmly and never once got frustrated with me at all. Amazing. Martin' dental nurse was adorable ( Karen). Best dentist I have ever seen I will go back to this practice and I have never said that before so after 20 years of not going to a dentist one very happy patient who is half way there to overcoming a deep rooted phobia I thought I would never get over. Cannot thank you enough and neither can my long suffering husband.

Fabulous!! Well done you!!!

:welldone::welldone::yayy::cheer::cheer2::dance::jump:

Im really pleased for you and it just goes to show what the right dentist can do, sounds like this chap is "a keeper", I'm guessing you are going to be signing up and coming up with a treatment plan so that you can get all those little cosmetic jobs attended to.

I had the same problem with a previous dental practice and was so glad that I fired them and found Mike, he has got me consenting to stuff that; if it had been suggested by the other practice I would have been heading for the hills:scared:. It's amazing how good the experience can be once you have found a dentist that you click with.

You should be rightfully very proud of yourself, now get yourself signed up and in no time you will be 100% sorted :)

Kind Regards

That's brilliant! It makes all the difference when you can find a dentist you trust

I'm so glad you found someone to do it and not the vet! I would definitely stick with this one!
