last Wednesday I had a retained baby tooth extracted due to some pain and sensitivity I was feeling under that particular tooth. Went to my local student dentistry clinic because I am uninsured, and other than extreme pain on the day of after the numbing wore off, it seemed like the blood clot stuck and it was only uncomfortable for the next few days as expected. After 3 days, my two stitches came out with no pain or bleeding.

I’ve done everything I was told to do post-op- no straws, no smoking, salt water rinses, etc. and as of yesterday (8 days post-op) visually the site looked to be healing pretty well, with only a small part still physically feeling like an open part of my gum for lack of better words. I’ve been careful to make sure food isn’t get stuck in there. For the most part, the rest of my gum was looking white-ish and healing.

That brings me to today, about an hour after eating a meal, I got a sudden taste of blood in my mouth. There didn’t appear to be any active bleeding, but the divot in my gum appeared to get deeper. There’s no pain, so I feel like it can’t be dry socket. Also, there’s a small swollen area on top of a tooth right next to the extraction site. It’s not painful in my mouth but it is upon pressing on the bump even lightly, same with the gums underneath the extraction. I figured this was just a part of healing, but it’s been so long that I wouldn’t think it would be painful to brush those teeth next to the site.

I’m becoming paranoid that the infection is still in my mouth bc I wasn’t given any antibiotics. My boyfriend thinks it’s maybe just irritated from eating but I’ve been very careful about keeping my food on the other side. I’m not sure if my nervousness is warranted bc I’ve never had an extraction done before. Should I be worried? I don’t want to make an unnecessary fuss if it’s just my anxiety but also don’t want it to be something crazy that could get worse if I ignore.

It sounds perfectly normal, there is going to be some bone remodelling going on and it takes more than a week.
