Hi. I am 34 years old and currently have braces. Yesterday I had some of my bottom brackets removed and replaced with different ones. After the brackets were removed, the ortho filed off the glue on the fronts of my teeth and then he filed across the tops of some of my teeth to get rid of the rough areas. All was fine until I went to eat dinner yesterday (several hours after the appt) and a piece of toasted bread rubbed across the top of one of the filed teeth. I saw stars. Very sharp pain--kinda like when you bit into ice cream. I also felt it when I brushed my teeth and when the hair dryer blew air past my mouth. When I rub my fingers across the top of the teeth, I can feel it too.

Will this go away with time or has something been done to damage my tooth?

Help, please.
Thanks,
Julie

Sorry, this is an "I'd need to see it" kind of question :'(

It might be that the enamel has been worn off a little on the top of the tooth by the filing off of the cement or it might be the teeth reacting to the loss of braces by moving out of their sockets slightly. The good news is that both of these are temporary sources of discomfort and should pass pretty quickly.
If it's the former then it may help to massage some Sensodyne toothpaste into the sensitive area with a finger, if you can't get Sensodyne then regular toothpaste will do in a pinch. Rub it in firmly after you've finished cleaning your teeth before you go to bed. It might help a bit.

If the problem persists then go to your dentist, but I bet you thought of that already... :D
