I have always had a dental phobia since having lots of teeth out when i was 8yrs old with bad experiences of coming round during procedure,so i can deal with anything but extractions.I also have a needle phobia, but again can just about deal with them when having fillings etc.

I have an impacted wisdom tooth that has grown at an angle into the tooth next to it,at xmas the tooth in front broken off a cusp, and the emergency dentist said i needed both extracting.I seen my original dentist who originally said i could have r/c and filling but now this wasnt an option, she agreed both have to go,however wisdom tooth needs to be done under GA in hospital (even though a previous dentist had said he could remove it fine in the sugery)however i wouldnt let him due to my extraction phobia.

I have had temporary filling in the broken tooth since december, and have been waiting since for my consultation at the hospital, which was last weds,my dentist has advised to remove 4 teeth in total which includes upper wisdom as well ,as is starting to decay and will be in my best interest get everything done in one session due to my phobia
I went to consultation and was unsure,i had questions to ask and didnt feel they were being answered, the dr said oh they will explain everything to you on the day ward when you make your appointment. He told me i have bad oral health! even though i have just had some of my onlays replaced and a filling and check up,he told me i have some bone loss on lower back jaw on both sides and could do with another tooth removing, which is one my dentist has just recently treated.

I have this needle phobia and the thought of having a cannula in my hand just physically makes me churn as much as having teeth removed while im awake,i just dont see any way out,i tried explaining my phobia to him and he said i need to make my mind up as if i have the GA ill be wasting 3grand of nhs money!
Needless to say i didnt warm to him at all lol,i was sent upstairs to get appointment for procedure to be told there is a very long waiting list for maxofacial a friend of mine just informed me she was on the list for 2 yrs!

Any1 have a suggestions for me,is there a tablet that knocks you out instead of needles,i have heard something about oral sedation whatever that is,every1 i have spoken to keeps telling me there is a risk i could not wake up from the GA which scares the crap outta me.I have never been in hospital b4 or had any kind of operation.
my bf had iv sedation a few yrs back but i know that still involves a needle.people tell me im a big baby, but every1 has their phobias.

Hi, I had my lower wisdom teeth out under a GA in the local hospital. It was a few years ago but that was the only way I could have it done back then due to my phobia.

My lower wisdoms were both impacted, (sideways), so were pushing the other teeth out of line. I also had a huge hole in one which was causing me a lot of pain. The upper ones were coming through correctly so I left them alone.

I was a nervous wreck when I went into hospital for their removal but it all went very smoothly. I was given pre-meds a couple of hours before the op, these were a couple of pills to relax me. I had a patch, with a load of cream under it, put on the back of my hand, this numbed the skin so I didn't feel the cannula being put in, of course I didn't look either. I was told to count to ten, I think I got to five, then I woke up back in my bed. Job was done.

In hindsight I should have gotten the upper wisdom teeth out at the same time as they have now pushed some of the others out of line. Back then though I only wanted done what was absolutly necessary, there was nothing wrong with the upper ones so they were left alone.

Really the fear of the procedure was far worse than the actual event.

people tell me im a big baby, but every1 has their phobias.

anyone can play it smart, brave and cool when he/she expereinces no fear. But when fear strikes, bye bye coolness.

You have every right to feel fear and not apologize for it. You are human , not a machine.

You also have evry right to fight your fears. You have to realize that your fear may make sense you , but its unreasonable none the less. You have to keep telling yourself that is going to be a walk in the park but that is exactly what is going to be.

Trust me. I removed a horizontal double wisdom tooh, burried inside the jaw bone and near the nerve. The oral surgeon said it was a very difficult extraction. And he is an experienced 60 year old, surgeon. I felt ZERO pain, with only local anaisthesic and I was scared 1000% . It helped however that my surgeon was very good a supportive. He even had to brake the tooth into smal parts, still , I flet ZERO pain. It took 45 minutes, still ZERO pain.

I was afraid of feeling pain afterwards even with painkillers.

4 th Day now.

STILL ZERO PAIN.
