I’ve read online that when it comes to toothpaste it’s more of just a preference when choosing which one to use as long as it contains fluoride but I was curious if you could recommend one that may be best for me. I brush very gently due to extremely sensitive (sometimes painful) gums. I feel like maybe because of this I usually don’t get all of the plaque removed while brushing. Is there a toothpaste that is good for targeting heavy plaque but safe for sensitive gums? I currently use Colgate total.

It really doesn't matter. Whatever one you prefer the taste of, just as long as there's Fluoride in it.

The gums should not be so sensitive that you can't brush, what does your dentist make of it?

Ok, that’s what I thought, thank you!
Unfortunately I haven’t been to the dentist in years. I’m extremely phobic and trying to get over it. I just had my wisdom teeth removed in May from an oral surgeon so that experience was a huge step for me but unfortunately didn’t make me any more comfortable with the idea of seeing a general dentist. I’m worried I will pick the wrong one and have a bad experience that will keep me from going back.
