Just wanted to post this for anyone who is feeling extremely anxious about getting a tooth extracted.

I was feeling so nervous to the point I was in tears but I knew I had to get it done and over with. My oral surgeon was amazing and his staff was incredible. I told them I was very nervous about the injections (def what I was most worried about) and he used a lot of numbing gel and made sure I was good and numb. When he did the injections the nurse rubbed my arm and I didn’t feel a thing!!!! He actually did the nerve block in two parts since he knew I was anxious about the needle. He got me numb first and then came back and completed the nerve block for the bottom jaw. I could feel the sensation of the needle going in but felt absolutely zero pain whatsoever.

As for the extraction, also felt no pain. Just a lot of pressure and pulling. It’s definitely a weird sensation and I felt like I could hear him scraping against my jaw but I didn’t even care because I couldn’t feel it lol it probably took less than 5 minutes to get the tooth out. Most of the appointment was getting numb.

It took about 8 hours for me to stop bleeding enough to stop changing the gauze but I was never profusely bleeding or anything like that. It took about 5 hours for the numbness to wear off. I’m 4 days post op and still eating soft foods and being very careful with that area. My jaw is still tender / sore but otherwise no pain. I barely had to take Tylenol and Advil this whole time. I only took pain medicine once the numbness wore off and for the next day but it was never immense pain.

I also have mitral valve prolapse with regurgitation and get palpitations and I had no issue with the lidocaine.

If you are feeling anxious just know you can get through it and you will be wondering why you felt so nervous!

@starklm26 that's brilliant! Such a relief when it's done and doesn't sound too traumatic either. We'll done.

i need a tooth out, now i'm most anxious about the bleeding afterwards, 8 hours, yikes, but i have to get tooth out as it's cracked. I am also worried about eating/drinking but will ask when i go for my consult on Monday, don't have a date for tooth out.

@nutzforcats the bleeding wasn’t a lot, more like an oozing. The worst part is not being able to eat or drink while the gauze is in your mouth. But by the next day I was able to eat soft foods like pudding, yogurt, egg salad on the other side of my mouth.

okay, thanks, i'm not sure what part of the day my appt. will be, not making it until monday, i know i will be too nervous to eat much if i can so will be hungry but will have to wait until i can take the gauze out to eat/drink. I didn't have an issue with two of my wisdom teeth i had out years ago, i will let them know that besides getting out the tooth, i am most concerned about the bleeding and i'm sure they will put my mind at ease. I am staying positive i will heal okay like i did before and do what i am told as best i can, lol. I am still upset i need this tooth out at all, how it got cracked with a perm. crown on it is a mystery but at least i'm almost 53 so not sure how much longer i will be here to worry about a back molar missing, i'm glad i'm not younger when this happened and got to keep this tooth as long as i have, it had a bad cavity in it 10 years ago, tried fillings and then it progressed to a root canal in 2018 and crown in 2019. I am trying to really enjoy eating what i can, i'm not a big eater but do like to eat healthy and eat enough to keep my energy up.

my appt. is tuesday at 2pm. I didn't have an issue with bleeding when i had wisdom teeth out so am thinking it will go the same way. I've had things not go smoothly with this tooth so am hoping this final appt. will go smoothly, i deserve it after all i've been through. :) i am going to be brave and will be happy once i get it out and can start eating better.

mine went smoothly, bled more than i thought but i did have to take the bus home and moving around after probably didn't help it.:( My oral surgeon didn't even use numbing gel, was surprised as my dentist always does, he did the shots soo quickly, i didn't have a chance to ask why! He got the tooth out in about 5 mins., it was crazy! on day 9 and so far no issues although my gum feels strange but no soreness.
