Ways to Minimize Gag Reflex During Cleaning

I have a appointment with a new dentist next Friday for a cleaning/exam. I have had a bad gag reflex in the past and was wondering what typical options were available to help minimize my gag reflex during my appointment?

A key factor in dealing with gagging is trust. Once you find a dentist you feel comfortable with, the sensitivity to gagging will lessen big time. Of course, easier said than done, it takes time and effort but the key relies mainly in the human factor.
