Hi! I have a lower wisdom tooth extraction on Monday. It is erupted but seriously broken to the point where there is hardly any tooth, but the root pulp (I think that's what it is) is clearly visible. Anyway, I've put it off for so long because I am afraid of the numbness. I have a ton of anxiety over sensations in my mouth, because I have a fear of experiencing allergic reactions resulting in my tongue or throat swelling. This has never happened in my life, it's an irrational fear. But the fear that I have is that I will feel this sensation that I'm terrified of and fly into a panic.. I had a baby 2 months ago and had an epidural, and I was totally ok with the numbing caused by that. For some reason it's a big issue for me mentally when it comes to my mouth.

When having a lower wisdom tooth removed, what will the numbing be like? Will I be able to swallow and feel my throat? How long does it take from numbing to extraction?

interested with peoples responses to this, i didnt think wisdom tooth removal just with local anesthetic was common?

@MagicDuck12 I think because it's just one fully erupted tooth it's pretty much like extracting any other molar. There won't be anything too invasive involved. But I really hate the fact that it's a bottom tooth, I hate the thought of not feeling my tongue.. 😭

Have you had a filling on the bottom arch before? Exactly the same as that.
Yes, you can swallow and feel your throat fine.
About 5 minutes or so from numbing to extraction, depends how fast the local works.

I had a lower wisdom tooth removed probably around 15 or so years ago so I'm sure times have changed. I had it under a local anaesthetic but at the hospital because my dental surgery didn't offer that service. Some do now. The worst part is the injection. Once numb it was fine. It was quite sore for a good week or so because of the stitches but fine after that.

You will be absolutely fine xx
