What causes random pain a week after tooth extraction?

Hey.

I had a tooth extraction last week, Monday, and it seems like it's been healing well. However, the last few days I've had random pains that last for a while, I take some ibruprofen, and then it dies down for the rest of the day. It usually tends to start in the morning, I take the painkillers, and it's gone. What could be causing this? The pain is kinda bad but not the worst pain I've felt.

I've not got a checkup with the dentist planned, should I?

Probably just healing pains, the socket can grumble a bit as the bone remodels. If ibuprofen manages it then carry on with that for a couple more days.
