Hello, I may need to have my upper right first molar extracted. I am told I’ll need an implant there to keep bone and other teeth healthy, but I cannot afford an implant as I am a single mother. I am thinking of just leaving it alone. Has anyone else had their first molar removed and lived with it with no complications or other dental problems resulting? I am so scared and I have been so depressed about the long-term affects of not having a tooth there. I am only 28 and still have a lot of time to live with this issue. I was told I could get bone loss in that area that could eventually affect other teeth, my jaw could start having problems and that I could have a “sunken cheek” over time without bone or a tooth in that area and maybe even facial symmetry issues in the long run. If you could give me your stories and maybe pictures, if you have them, I’d be so appreciative! Thanks.

Hi there! I’ve numerous missing molars, a lot done as emergency extractions as I’ve been terrible with going for routine visits!

I’ve not had any replacements and my mouth is fine. I know they’re obviously missing but I don’t feel like my face looks awful or anything. I’m also 28.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thank you so much for telling me your experience! It has helped ease my mind a little bit :)

Needadvice,

I so get your situation. I'm a single mom too and need alot of work but very limited funds to spend on dental. My last dentist before my current would try to push implants but I always felt bad. I just could not afford it . Give yourself grace , take one step at a time as you can, its hard not to stress about it.. My inner critic gets on me and tells me some negatives about not doing but at the same time , I'm doing all I can and last year ended up being able to get a few crowns and an implant.. but that was the first year i was able to do that for myself.

It takes time for things to progress, i've been missing several in my upper right for years.. and I JUST got an implant last year.. sure I would like to do more but one step at a time.. Some dentists really push the implants or other treatment while others are more conservative with it.

I’m also having problems with a newly crowned rt molar and I feel that it maybe the end of the road for this tooth! I will be following this thread

I am missing 4 molars..2 uppers on the same side and 1 lower on each side. I’m 37 and it hasn’t made my face look different and really isn’t super noticeable. I can eat just fine, I’ve gotten used to not chewing in certain spots.

I am possibly going to lose my upper 2nd molar, which the oral surgeon said would not be a good candidate for an implant. He said it wouldn't really cause much concern, if any.

Also, my husband had both his 1st and 2nd molars extracted on the upper right over a year ago. He chose to leave them alone for now, and you can't even tell. His other teeth haven't shifted, and so far his dentist said no bone loss. He is debating getting an implant for the first molar sometime in the future, when we have saved up some extra money, but his dentist says he has time

I am missing lower molars on both sides, with no issues. I do have my wisdom teeth which possibly helps. My teeth have never shifted, and the teeth were extracted years ago. I actually went to see an implant specialist shortly after the second extraction, and he said he thought I would do just fine without, and that no-one (or me) would ever notice the gaps. I thought that was super kind of him, given how much money he could have made. I think implants are mainly used here (UK) for more visible teeth - my mum has two, but they are front teeth.

I am missing a lower 1st molar and the opposing upper molar has started to Supraerupt and it will need to be removed. My lower 2nd molar has also now started to shift slightly. I am going to be getting implants on the lower and upper 1st molars. Although I know people that have their lower 1st molar out and they haven't had any problems. I think I'm just VERY unlucky :(
