Other members have mentioned they got impressions taken of their teeth before they got braces put on. I an curious, why is this done? What are the impressions used for?

From what I can remember my impressions were initially used to map out the length of wire needed and the number of brackets etc and generally to get a feel and a quick reference guide for the orthodontist.

I certainly don't remember having "after" impressions taken, only before. I think they're probably also quite good for designing retainers.

I know your pain with the impressions. I don't mind dental stuff but orthodontics I really didn't enjoy. I didn't really like my orthodontist I found him really annoying actually lol and the impressions really tickled my gag reflex and I hated the taste. So I know your pain. I can empathise... but I don't know whether you absolutely HAVE to have an impression taken? I'd ask your orthodontist and see if you can avoid it if you're really worried about gagging, choking or indeed puking. I wasn't initially worried but I can say I wouldn't want to have one again given the choice. *:'(

I had before and after for these reasons(uk) :)

The impressions are taken so the orthodontist can have models of your teeth to study andplan your treatment - wich teeth need to be moved etc.

Thanks folks!! I REALLY appreciate your feedback. :)
Just to clarify, I am not going to an orthodontist for my braces. My dentist, Dr. Katy, will be doing them. It is my understanding that not all general dentists have the training to do orthodontics. She has the training and experience to do both regular braces and Invisalign for which I am truly grateful. As I said in one of my other posts, Dr. Katy and I have talked about doing this for a long time. Its been part of her long term treatment plan for me. We have spent the last two years doing all the restorative/reconstructive work that was needed because it had been so many years since I had any dental care. Now we are ready for the last phase of treatment which is straightening my teeth. Dr. Katy has told me when I am done with my braces "your teeth will be gorgeous!"
I can't wait:yay:
