Will a dentist clean teeth before extraction or root canal?

Because of one of my molars being badly broken and with pulp polyp in it, i am not able to clean it properly so i noticed that a streak of tartar built up at the bottom ( let's add that to the pile of things to be embarassed about.. ) my question is: will the dentist clean out all the nasty stuff before any surgery? I am scared that if they just pull it, the bacteria will enter my bloodstream and i will get a bad infection.
