Wisdom teeth, all 4 have to be extracted...

since i subscribed to this forum, i had 2 teeth extracted, and they did told me to continue taking Advil afterward to ease the pain, but quite frankly, i think i felt nothing...i mean...i really hated the needles/injections, but after that, i think it went all ok. The repairs of the 2 teeth went ok so far i think.

I remember the 1st time during extraction, i rinsed my mouth with the small cup and water they provide, but the 2nd time, for some reasons there was more of that suff they inject, but in my mouth, and its taste almost made me throw up, i tried hard not to, and i rinsed quickly.

So now there's 2 teeth to repair (upper right and lower right). I got my appointment for tomorrow at 10am...at least it's with the same dentist i had for the 2 previous times, so i guess being with the same dentist do help.

But afterward it will be THE appointment, the one that will be to remove all 4 wisdom teeth. As far as i know, they told me they prefer to remove all 4 at the same time, not 2 appointments for that.

So i'm more stressed about the wisdom teeth removal, not only for the needles, but afterward. In fact, what are they doing for the upper wisdom teeth? are they going to suture the gum closer together to help with the healing? are they going to put some medicine to stop the bleeding in the socket(s)? i mean...the upper sockets are pointing down, how can they stop bleeding? i understand for the lower sockets, but the upper ones? :(

we're in 2012, why isn't there another way to numb the gums or mouth without needle? it would help greatly if such method exist, this way i wouldn't be so extremely stressed about going to the dentist, because the main reason (for me anyway) is the damn needle.

Now...generally, can you explain me what they will do when removing wisdom teeth? are they going to apply medicine to help in the healing? are they likely going to prescribe me something for the pain? Is it the same "healing process" as any other teeth being removed?

There's 1 wisdom tooth that didn't completely erupted (there's still some gum covering it i think), so are they going to cut a big part of my gum or something? i don't know what the tools look like, and i didn't wanted to look at all (i always asked to use the sunglasses they lend during the appointment, but i still close my eyes).

I do know i need to keep my head straight for a day or two, to sleep with my head as straight as possible (not on the side) for a day or two, to not lift or do heavy chores, to not apply/use pressure inside the mouth, eating soft food, i'll probably start to buy those small canned pasta (Alpha-getti), that i ate while healing from those 2 teeth removed.

thank you very much for reading my post, and helping me with wisdom teeth removal tips.

Hi ... I'm in the same boat nearly. I have to have my bottom wisdoms out and they are partial boney impacted which means they will have to remove some of my jaw bone to the get them out. I'm scared to death but have to have it done. How they will do it all depends on your teeth like whether or not they are erupted or if they are straight or impacted some how. I can tell you that the top ones are the easier ones. When I had my top ones out they did not suture them. I don't know if they will do that for you or not. Depends on your os. Yes, afterwards you need to try and keep your head elevated to help with the bleeding. You might want to put ice on your jaws the first day then after that you can use a heating pad or something. The first day you won't want to spit or drink through a straw or blow your nose. No rinsing the 1st day either. Just try to eat some soft foods with your medicine. They should give you some pain meds but you can also take ibuprofen. After the 1st day is over you can start doing warm salt water rinses. You will also want to brush your teeth staying away from the extraction sites if you can. Its important to keep your mouth as clean as possible. They may give you a special rinse. Let us know how it goes.

i know that my 2 upper wisdom teeth are a little bit angled, but not much, my lower left tooth i can see it completely, but seem a little "short", but it's visible completely. The right one is partially erupted, so i guess they will have to remove that bit of gum on top of it.

thank you.

My dentist said that my wisdom teeth aren't impacted, and the healing process should pretty much be the same as the previous 2 molar i got extracted in August. He said "after 5-7 days you should be fine".

If i remember well, the bleeding is mostly during the first 1-2 days after extraction, right?

i didn't got stitches for the 2 molars extraction back then, but do i have more chances they will stitch them more together for the wisdom teeth?

If your wisdom teeth are not impacted in any way you shouldn't have any trouble. They should be pretty much like any other molar extraction. The bleeding just depends. It might be a couple of days or only 1 day. Just remember to change the gauze every hour or so and wet it just a little before you put more in. Bite down gently to put some pressure on it. If you still have trouble with bleeding use a damp tea bag and bite on it. It will help stop bleeding.

When i got the 2 molars extracted, they gave me some gauzes, but i did bought some before just in case. But i think there wasn't a need to wet them.

Now i need to know...will they have to inject me like 7-8 times in total to numb me?

Because when i got the 2 molars on the lower right extracted, and fixed the 2 lower left molars, the dentist had to inject me about 4 times, on each side. But for the upper right tooth, i think he injected me 2 times, and i almost didn't felt the needle, it was much much less painful.

Or maybe since it's more in-depth, he won't have to inject as much since the nerves meets around there, so my guess is the numbing will spread more easily?

i didn't got an answer from the previous message, but it's ok.

the appointment i got is for Jan.16. during the morning. The dentist said it won't be that much of a problem since my wisdom teeth doesn't seem to be impacted, and he said i should feel alright in about a week, about the same as the previous molars i got taken out before.

Hi Raptor... I don't think anyone could possibly tell you how many local injections you will need. It may take as many as before with the molars but then again it might not. The most important thing is just to be numbed up good so you won't feel any pain. That is great news that your teeth are not impacted. I hope you have an easy procedure and recovery. Let us know how it goes.

do you think taking an Advil 200mg before the appointment might help also?

merry christmas! :)

It might but be sure and let the dentist/os know if you do.

ok

So if it goes well, after that i'll have 1 cavity left to repair.

6 days left before the appointment.

So since my wisdom teeth aren't impacted, it should be easier for me on the healing process? The dentist did said "you'll be fine 1 week later".

Also, i bought something called "Aleve"(220mg Naproxen), fairly new in Canada, the pharmacist told me it last 10-12 hours compared to Advil lasting about 6 hours. Though i do have a sealed bottle of Advil 200mg still with 32 liqui-gels in it.

I still wonder about the process though...will they use dissovable stitches for the wisdom teeth sockets? since it's deep in the mouth, is it more at risk for food to get in the sockets? should i be even more careful than the previous 2 molars i got removed back in August?

I still wonder if the dentist will have to inject me like 5-6 times on each side...this is what i hate the most for this process, the numbing.

It would be perfectly reasonable for you to ask the oral surgeon all those questions. Some don't even use stitches at all. Hope everything goes well for you and they get you numbed up really good. My appointment is on the 17th a week from today. I'm scared to death! It is my bottom ones which are partial boney impactions and my os has told me I will swell and be very sore. Not looking forward to that at all or the risk of nerve damage. Hope it all goes well for us both!

i think i said it in a previous post, but the lower right wisdom tooth is partially out. But the dentist didn't show any complain when i said "i want all 4 of them removed, i don't want to come back for a wisdom tooth later". They seem to be pretty good so far.

I absolutely don't blame you. I know I wouldn't come back for another one. Keep us updated and I hope it goes very well.

i just hope it won't be someone else doing the extraction. So far the 3 dentists i met there, i liked 2 of them, strangely the woman dentist i met didn't seem very patient with me. The 2 other dentists are men, 1 is the main dentist, Dr. Lorange, and is the one who opened this cabinet, and the other one, Dr. La (asian) seem to be pretty good as well, and understanding. I've been told that Dr. La is normally doing the extractions. I remember because i was supposed to meet him for the previous extraction appointment, but instead Dr. Lorange did it. So since then i've been wanting for Dr. Lorange to do all that with me as i feel i can trust him and more confident when i'm with him.

Also, i'm always asking to get the sunglasses, even if i close my eyes anyway. I guess this is psychology here, to make it feel better.

i heard you about risk of nerves damage...i wonder...is the wisdom teeth extraction have a higher risk of nerves damage?

Well, when it comes to nerve damage it all depends on how close the teeth/roots are to the nerve. Have you looked at your xray? I think it's a small chance.

they do show you the x-ray on a screen, as they have a digital x-ray machine there. But i didn't noticed the nerves, i mostly focused on my teeth and wisdom teeth, and noticed none are impacted, they are straight, well in my mouth, they lean a little outward from the gum, but they aren't impacted. He did looked at the x-ray and told me i should be fine in about a week later.

I don't think they have oral surgeon there, just dentists and their assistants. The dentist himself did the injections to me everytime. I remember i didn't liked it when he injected me many times for the previous extraction in August, and i think he did used topical gel. Maybe he didn't applied it at the right place? maybe the little stick moved and this is why i felt the needle everytime?

Because when i got a filling done on an upper tooth, he did applied the topical gel before, and i think i didn't felt the needle at all, he injected me twice there, maybe it took less because i wasn't tense, but more relaxed?

Makes sure they leave the numbing gel on a few minutes before doing the locals. That should make it work better. If your teeth are erupted normally and not impacted your chance of nerve damage is very remote I would think. Sometimes the roots can still be close to a nerve but they would probably have mentioned that to you if they were. I'm sure everything will be fine.

before he begin, i'll ask him if i can come back at the beginning of March to repair the hopefully last tooth. I'm getting sick of going to the dentist...
