hi guys. i gotten my wisdom teeth removed today and it was so horrible. i was supposed to get all 4 removed but they were removed only one and here’s why. I’m 17 years old and i went in for an IV sedation. i really didn’t have any feelings of anxiety or anything but anyway they came in he didn’t really introduce himself to me or said a word. They put the IV in strapped me down and put a cloth over my face. they didn’t wait for me to fall asleep. they went straight in. I WAS FULLY AWAKE the whole entire time. all i felt was the pain from right when they started. i was screaming and crying horribly because i was in extreme pain and they didn’t stop at all. them stabbing the needles everywhere was so bad. i can’t even reimagine the whole situation because no one should ever go through that, i felt as they needed to stop right away when saw i didn’t fall asleep. the strapping and the cloth on my face made things worse. or am i just being over dramatic? i was supposed to be asleep. now they said i have to go somewhere further to get the rest of them out. :/

Hi @Aabbb34, no, you’re not being overdramatic. That sounds absolutely horrific and it certainly doesn’t resemble anything dentists are taught in IV sedation courses and supervision. There’s a huge emphasis on making sure that patients are comfortable and at ease, and that they are properly sedated before starting, and numbed up welll before starting on any treatment. Also, restraints or cloths over your face are a no-no. That’s the situation in the UK at least.

What you’re describing sounds like those horrible papoosing places in the US that you occasionally read about on the internet (there used to be a website called Dentist the Menace which specifically dealt with this phenomenon- not sure if the website still exists). It’s frightening to read that this sort of thing is still happening in this day and age.

Have you been able to talk to your parents about what happened?

@letsconnect hi, yes i have. I told the whole story again last night and i actually broke down. I never had any type of surgery or had any teeth pulled out so i didn’t know what i was expecting. my sister did get her wisdom teeth out there two years ago with a different surgeon and she said he talked her through it and waited until she fell asleep. I don’t know what was going through my surgeons mind. he literally didn’t speak to me at all nor told me what we was going to do. also the cloth on my face too. my sister never got that either. they all don’t agree about what happened.

It might be an idea to complain to whoever manages the place you went to, and let them know what happened. It might help prevent something similar from happening to other people in the future. It certainly doesn't sound like a place you'd ever want to return to, that's for sure.

Do you know where they're proposing you get them out?
