Hello
This is my first time posting but I have been lurking for about a month now. My story is I have had very limited dental care since I was a kid and I'm now 41. After not going for quite some time I decided to go because my gums have receded to the point where my bottom front 4 teeth are real lose. I'm very ashamed that I did not take good care of my teeth when I had the chance but it was something that I just wasn't taught to do when I was young and when I did get older I would only visit the dentist when I had to have a teeth looked at because of pain or to have it removed. The last time I had one removed, i had to turn around and have another removed about a week later because the infection and pain spread to that tooth. I was in severe pain following the original extraction which led to the other one. Most of my life I have been a housewife with my husband only working so we had limited health insurance.
I have since went to work as my children became older and have my own dental insurance. Well I visited the dentist about a month ago and I've been told what I figured out before hand. I have severe gum disease (its hereditary as my dad only informed me when it was way too late that this runs in his family). Anyways I'm going to have to have the 4 front teeth removed at the bottom along with 4 front teeth at the top, along with deep cleaning, surgery, and some other things. I can't even remember all the dentist told me I have to have done because I was simply overwhelmed by the procedures needed along with how much it costs. I have dental insurance but as most of you know it only covers so much yearly. I don't know what I'm going to do but I know I need to get this taken care of. I will need dentures as well. I know that I can't afford implants. I just don't have that type of money. What I'm also bummed about is that I don't want to be without teeth. I have to work in a office and talk on the phone and to people daily. I don't get much PTO, so I can't take an extended vacation to wait for dentures to come back. The first dentist I went to wants me to wait for the partial to come back which is 2-3 weeks. When I told the lady that works in his office I couldn't do that, they acted like I had said something wrong and when I mentioned immediate dentures, they said that they had never heard of that. I can't be without teeth for that long. So I'm worried about that along with all the other things I have to get done to get this turned around which include deep cleaning and scaling and another procedure which I can't remember at this time but I can't even start that one until I get the teeth extracted and dentures. All of these things are very expensive even with my insurance. I think the deep cleaning alone may eat up the little the dental plan will help with. I'm just really feeling sad right now and looking for some encouragement. I will be visiting a 3rd dentist this Monday. I'm going there because they offer same day dentures. I hope I didn't confuse anyone by my post. I know its kinda all over the place but I'm writing this right before bed after a very long day at work.
So my questions are has anyone here had the deep cleaning and scaling for severe gum disease. Did you have to have teeth removed? How long did it take for your journey to be completed from finding out you had gum disease to the cleaning, extractions, the surgery for the gum disease to where you are now? Please forgive me if I wondered off from topic to topic. Again, its been a long day and a long month since I found this out and I'm still processing it all. If you have questions to ask me because I wasn't clear or left something out, please feel free to ask.
Thanks In Advance
