Ok im sure u answered this before but im skered so bad to go back. This is how it went down.I had 4 fillings planed so he started on the bottom left of my mouth the tooth next to my wisdom tooth. He gave me the injection then 20 seconds later started drilling if not less maybe 10-15 . I felt a little at start he drilling for 10 seconds then stoped. the girl with him asked how was i i said i feel a lttle paine . He changed tool scraped a little then back to the drill then OH MY GOD it was like he drillied through my tooth into my gum. The sharp pain made me jurk like a sissy. my tooth was instant throbbing. he then carried on ragardless . i put hand up to stop him. then he gave me another injection and left it again 20 seconds. started again same pain just as bad but the throbbing was getting worse. he continued saying its a deep filling . I finaly though it was over and he said ok normal filling wont work i am going to have to bring u in for a root cannel or to lose the tooth. he then slapped some white crap on the tooth told me 2 get some antibiotics, and take my own pain releifs. i swear for 2 hours pain didnt go even with anaadol fast relief. Now i got to go back and the pain was unreal and hes not even finished one tooth. he said i got another deep one aswe;; at the top and 2 normal once. But i just dont know if i am man enough for it i was almost crying it was so bad. so what i would like to now plz god is . SHOULD IT HURT SO MUCH. this is a new dentist i am at first time there. he took my exray and things and told me 2 come back in 1 week. Plz give me some advice he told me 2 decide if ruit cannel or tooth out for next week. to which i replied WHICH EVER HURTS LESS. HE SAID taking it out would hurt less. i mean wtf people this is 2012 and its like torture the tooth wasnt even hurting me to start with lol. what i didnt understand is through me complaining about the pain why did he only give me 1 injection then when he finished and put temp filling on , he gave me another injection then i was done. so i basicly got a 2nd injection then 10 sec later i was outside. Plz some advice if this is normal coz if so im just guna have both deep teeth taken out. if anyone is free to reply anyone who has profesional advice or some one in same siutation plz help. I got 3 more of theses to come and im half way into 1 lol

I am not a dentist, but do not see this dentist again, I am feeling stressed reading this, this is not normal at all.

Go find another dentist, you should not have felt any pain at all, if you do at any time they should give you more of the numbing stuff and wait for it to work. If you have teeth out you cannot get them back a root canal is the way to go but with another dentist. Your visit is like something out of a horror story. I could not have sat through it. The white stuff he has put in your tooth is a bit of white temporary filling.

I had a root canal recently and I felt nothing.

Please find another dentist, this man is a sadist.

yeh Carole i got out of the dentist and said to the girlfriend i cant go back lol. but i have to. he gave me a temp filling which is just some white blob on my tooth. I dont know if i can even eat normal foods with it or whatever lol. He said root cannal is what he wants to do but after what he did with a basic filling i cant imagine him takin out all my nerve and things that goes with a it :<. Worse part is thow he said i have another tooth with deep filling in the upper top back tooth next to my wisdom where he needs to go equaly as deep. He said something sometimes the tooth doesnt go fully numb and said i need to use antibiotics for a week so it will numb . How troublesome its stressing me lol. im glad ur root cannal was painless thow hehe. i woulnd wish that pain on anyone my ear was throbbing for least 2 hours and my top left gum was even hurting for abut an hour. i just dont know what i gained from this visithe drilled something gave insane pain then took exray then said come back in a week, .he kept mentioning hes reily close to the nerve but it was like he in the nerve lol. and there is only one other dentist around where i am and they are private i cant afford them

My tooth that I had the root canal in had an abscess and I had to take antibiotics first, if a tooth cannot be numbed they should stop, which your dentist did eventually. If you are not numbed tell them straight away and don't let him carry on without been numb.

You can eat normally with the temp filing, within reason, no toffee or nuts on that side. If you feel you can see this man again I hope it goes better next time for you. Pulling the tooth would be quicker but if he can't numb you for a root canal, it would be the same for extraction.

Good luck with your next appointment. I hope it goes well.

when they numb ur tooth for ur root cannal carole did they inject directly into ur tooth ? or just usualy into u gum somewhere. So im ok to drink tea and coffee with this temp filling i take it hehe. i was skered top go dentist in the first place but now after this is just unreal. he must of carried on doing things for least 5 mins before stoping after i mentioned not numb everything hurt even him putting the white stuff in the tooth and pressing it in.Oh and yeh its bin 5 hours since my time at the dentist can i drink coffee tea so on?

Yes you can drink tea and coffee, you can eat but just don't go mad it is weaker now but you will be fine. Could you not go to another dentist.

My dentist rubbed a gel on my gum and the roof of my mouth then slowly injected my gum between my teeth and cheek side, then the roof of my mouth and a tiny bit more on the other side. He waited a couple of minutes then prodded me with something to see if I was numb, I thought I was so he started drilling. I felt nothing, my root canal was done over 2 appointments and both times no pain. The first app they take out the roots and clean the canals out, put temp filling in. Second app drill temp filling out and any old silver filling, clean it out again then filled it. He is leaving it now until June to settle then he will crown it. I had the choice of extraction or rct. I had a bad infection and I ended up having about 7 courses of antibiotics from Sept to Dec last year. I never felt anything when he was working though.

I hope you will do better next time just don't let them start until you are numb.

4 in jections wow im so jelous i got one lol. Gues he wasnt feeling in the giving mood lol

Wow. I felt traumatised just reading about this! I'm really sorry you suffered so much.

I'm 100% with Carole on this. If I were you I'd definitely go to a different dentist.

If it helps, in November last year I had one stage of a root canal performed (painlessly) on a lower back tooth while I had an acute abscess. This was done by an emergency dentist. For this appointment I had a nerve block injection, which pretty much numbed the whole side of my face (ahhhh - instant pain relief at that point). The dentist sat me in the waiting room for fifteen minutes for it to take effect. When she started working I told her I felt a twinge, so she injected more anaesthetic inside the tooth.

In December I had the second stage done (also painlessly) by a different dentist, actually a root canal specialist (endodontist). She gave me three injections which were more localised, and we waited some 25 minutes for those to take effect (it takes some of us quite a while to achieve anaesthesia). As she worked on the individual root canals, she also put anaesthetic gel down each one because she observed some inflammation there and didn't want me to be in discomfort.

Take home message: it's perfectly fine to see a different dentist for the next stage of your treatment.

By the way, you're no sissy. You're human. If you feel pain it's a matter of biology not moral fibre. It'd take a robot not to react to the sort of pain you describe here. I really hope your next appointments are pain-free. As my regular dentist says, "You have every right to be comfortable during treatment".

What a horrible horrible story, there is no reason for anyone to experience any pain....let alone excrutiating pain during dental work. I had an extraction last week and felt NOTHING after my injections. Why did he continue when you were in so much pain....I presume you told him how bad it was ???

Dreadnought AND Carys thanks for ur replies they help me alot . and yeh carys i did tell them i told the girl who helps at start i can feel him scraping the tooth a little painfull be he even started drilling but he serously injected me once put down the injection and picked up drill like 10 seconds

My old dentist used to call u in b4 u apointment and num u mouth b4 u go in like 20 mins b4 hand.He just seemed in a super rush :/even when i told him it hurt i didnt get another injection into he was done with all drilling and putting the tempery filling in which all hurt. Then after that he gave me a 2nd injection and then put me under a xray then send me out done.

would u mention 2 him that its suposed to be painless if u was me when u go back before he start and how it hurt alot Carys,Dreadnought,Carole thats to u all hehe. All he kept sayin when i said it hurt was its a dee[ filling im going deep near the nerve when i mentioned the pain. Then at the end he said we try a ruit cannel or lose tooth next week. Id love a root canal but im skered of him lol was liek something out of hostelhe just went all way down middle of tooth i felt everything

I've 'fired' dentists for much smaller problems than this! Believe me, you don't want to end up letting yourself get more traumatised than you have been. Please take care here.

If I were you and I did go back to the same dentist (although there would be no chance whatsoever of that happening if I really were you), I would definitely tell him how much it hurt last time. I'd also ask to be numbed up well in advance. And I'd very carefully watch his response to this feedback. If he didn't seem sympathetic I wouldn't let him work on me.

You don't have to throw yourself on anyone's mercy here. You are allowed to insist that he go only as far as you allow. Anything else is assault.

The "It's a deep filling" line seems like a big crock of caca to me (if you'll pardon my French). I had a very deep filling recently which took the dentist slightly by surprise. He said, "This one is a lot deeper than I was expecting. You may feel some discomfort, but if you do then I'll immediately give you more anaesthetic". He was as good as his word - that's how to deal with a deep filling, in my opinion.

Remember: you shouldn't have to suffer. It's natural and normal to fear pain - we have evolved to find it extremely upsetting and aversive, and for very good reason!

yeh dread this place i paid in advance u like pay for checkup and whatever £45 pound then whate ever else is all included aka filling so . so i got a checkup and 4 fillings for £45. Tbh he just seemed rushed what was the block thing u was on about plz do u think i can ask for that to totaly block pain?. but ye he just kept sayin it only hurt coz i had to go so close to the nurve .but i mean what did he even do i still got to go back for the Root cannal. So all that pain and for what lol. And if its the same again wont it be even worse if a root cannal ? If he cant stop the pain when hes going low in the filling DEEP. How is he going to stop it hurting when hes on the nerves like root cannal.dont they go all the way into the nurves and take them out lol.

That sounds awful! Please see a different dentist! That story is very scary and I almost feel like crying just reading and imagining it!

You do not deserve to be treated that way!

Sort of set a flag off for me when you said he gave you an injection and only waited 10 seconds or so to begin drilling. My dentist gives me shots and lets me get numb for a good 5 or 10 minutes before drilling. Those shots certainly need a good minute or two at the very least to set in, right? At least from my experiences they have...

If you do go back to him, ask that they give you 2 shots and give you a few minutes to lose feeling. However, I feel like te dentist was being quite reckless and TRYING to get a root canal out of you.

I'm no dentist, but I have had 13 cavities and a good few of them are pretty deep. They should not hurt that bad when you get fillings. I'd see another dentist.

I know next to nothing about dental anaesthesia and I don't know you, so I really wouldn't be able to say whether a nerve block would be the best thing for you (btw, a nerve block is basically a way of numbing a particular region of your body, like the whole of your finger or the lower half of your lip and mouth). Different dentists seem to do things a bit differently - I had 2 injections for my implant and didn't feel a twinge.

When I was a junior hospital doctor one of my mentors was a surgeon who had originally trained in dentistry. He taught me more than anyone else about giving local anaesthesia effectively and painlessly - dentists seem to learn a lot about this in their training.

(NB I don't know anything about dentistry - only what I've learned as a patient).

Any half-decent dentist I've ever known as a patient has had a range of techniques for achieving anaesthesia. Waiting for the anaesthetic drug to take effect is usually a pretty important part of things. As Eshy has said, it's a total red flag that your guy started working so quickly.

You need to be pretty numb for a root canal - yes, as Carole has said it involves stripping out the dental pulp from inside your tooth, which includes nervous tissue.

Is there a practice manager you could talk to about getting a refund?

yeh eshy he said to me he was going to do the left side today and get it done, so i think he mite have just bin trying to do what u said and finish it all. But made no effort to make me comfortable, or pain free!! I explained to him several times that it was really hurting. Had earache and toothache for ages, never felt pain like it. There was quite a few people waiting to be seen, so i think he was trying to rush, and get me in and out. So nervous to go back and get it finished off! Especially when i have to have another one done after this ones done!!! :o

Sorry, but you'd not get me back to this dentist !!!! Never, not in a million years. :censored:

yeh dreading it so bad. Worse part is when i was leaving with extreme pain i was after some reason for the pain and he said this. Well u have 2 choices next week u can have a root cannal or we can take out the tooth. To which i replied which ever hurts less coz that was insane pain .He didnt say oh sorry it should of hurt or anything he said " Well taking out the tooth is less painfull but then u lose a tooth . So lol how about that for some kind final words lol

I am thinking you are in the UK if so please do not go back to this dentist.

As I said I had a root canal with no pain and they take the root out, so if I was not numb I would have felt it like you did, about 5 years ago I had a very deep filling that has got a protective covering over it inside the tooth under the filling, this was done because the dentist went very near the nerve. I had no pain.
That tooth is now playing up so I have to go to the dentist, I have a different dentist now.
I do not expect to suffer any pain, as this tooth now has to have a root canal. I do feel a little jittery after reading your thread and I am sure my dentist will not allow me to feel pain. If I get a twinge I am out of there.

You don't have to go to this dentist, I know you have paid but like Dreadnought said have a word with the practice manager, e mail or write if you don't feel you can speak to them about it. Or get your girlfriend to ring and have a word on your behalf.

Is he the only dentist at the practice?

If not maybe you could see one of the others. Your dentist is a butcher of the worst kind. They wouldn't and couldn't treat an animal like you were treated.

i think hes done the first part of the root canal, i have to go back for the 2nd part on monday, i am hoping it is just the filling he has to do?
Yes i think i might ask if i can see a different dr. Really puts the fear in you when you experience pain like that. Dont want to go back at all. have no trust in this dr at all now!! Probably never go back to dentist after this experience!!!
Thank you all for your feedback it has really helped! Went on bupa website and read up on root canals and it said the anaesthetic usually lasts several hours!! mine never even took effect propery!! Wasnt even numb an hour.

But thanks again all, :)

Even if your tooth were infected and that were the issue, he still behaved really badly and didn't wait long enough for the LA to work. He sounds incompetent as well as sadistic.
It might be best to see an endodontist to get the root canal done. You can then expect it to be painfree. If you are in UK endodontists are hard to find but a private dentist with an interest in root canal work would be a good choice.

DO NOT GO BACK!
