Hi All,
Apologies for asking this question for what is likely the umpteenth (or should that be umpteeth...) time!
I had emergency root canal surgery a month or so back due to a chipped tooth and exposed pulp (yum) - this was performed at hospital and then made an appointment with the dentist to have the root canal completed properly. I went in for the appointment on Friday and after an hour of trying the dentist says they could not perform the root canal successfully as one of my roots was blocked with something, they couldn't tell what but reading about it looks like it might have calcified?
My options were to see a specialist or get it taken out, I decided there and then to get it taken out (A, I couldn't afford the specialist, and B I just wanted the hassle over). The procedure was shockingly painless - no pain whatsoever, just some pressure and horrendous cracking noises...
The bleeding didn't stop for a good 5-6 hours but think this was my fault, I didn't clench down hard on the gauze for fear of hurting or doing something to the extraction site. Basically after 24 hours I noticed a small amount of white material forming over the hole which I gather is a good sign. I am now into my 70th hour post extraction and although I have been pain free until today there has been slight throbbing of the area today, nothing too bad and I've not even had to take meds for it but after the horrendous stories of dry socket...ya know, you can never be too careful! The site it now covered in a mixture of white, dark red (blood coloured) and pinkish material still and I can't see into my tooth at all - this material is layered over the top of the socket whereas others have mentioned their 'clot' being right at the bottom of their socket - is there a chance this formation has appeared over the socket without actually there being any clot below it keeping the bone safe? Probably a ridiculous question but hey, I specialise in them.
I think I've been doing all the right things, I don't smoke, haven't used any straws and have been doing regular warm salt baths - I am still also on liquid diets mainly as I'm being super cautious and paranoid (although I did treat myself to chips last night...). I thought I could taste something quite metallic this morning and worried it was the start of the horrible dry socket (I've heard this causes foul taste and smell), my breath isn't at it's freshest and also smells slightly metallic but this is probably because I've not had chance to brush my teeth properly in days.
I guess the slight throbbing 70 hours later is still pretty normal?
Also, what happens with the yellowy/red material that is covering the tooth? Does that just fall off or dissolve eventually? I'm terrified of it coming off so haven't been anywhere near it but I'm under the thinking now that when it goes, dry socket is right around the corner.
I'm simply here for reassurance please.
