...hi everybody. I'm fighting a nasty abcess problem, getting ready to take more aggressive steps, and just wondering what to expect from anyone whos been here. Basically, I got a funny feeling in a molar 2-3 months ago, dr put me on amoxicillin, upgraded to Augmentin, with root canal scheduled for 2 weeks later. Root canal failed, abcess prevailed, Endo Dr rec'd extraction. Tooth pulled, puss comin out everywhere 3 days later. Post op infection was diagnosed, back on Amox. Now a painful lump is formed on the jaw where the extraction was difficult aft 5 days on antis. Has anyone been thru this? Some people are tellin me that I may lose part of my jaw, I dont know. I am NOT 2nd guessing my drs in any way. If anyone has been thru this, I would appreciate your input on what to expect..
 
You need someone to be following up your healing (or not as the case may be).
I've moved this to dentistry questions so you can get a dentist's advice. At the risk of stating the obvious, your priority is to get the infection under control - this may involve seeing a specialist.
 
I haven't seen too many patients lose part of their jaw after having a dental abscess dealt with so it's probably safe to say that those people telling you that most likely don't know what they are talking about. ::)

Well, unless you've had some heavy duty radiation therapy or are taking IV bisphosphonates then I could be wrong there. Anyways, if it's a regular run of the mill dental problem, sometimes these complications can occur where there develops a dry socket or persistent infection in the area.

In fact, after my lower left horizontally impacted wisdom tooth was removed, I developed a similar hard lump just forward of the area for a short while. I suspect it was a small nidus of infecion where bacteria were trapped creating a hard, painful lump. After antibiotic treatment it eventually shrunk away, and my jaw is still intact and functioning well so I suspect you most likely will be the same.
 
Thanks Zzzz! It seems like the persistent infection problem, and I havent had any radiation. Im going for a more follow up today, and will report back the verdict. I must say after reading this forum, I certainly do not feel alone anymore. Good luck to everybody else who is suffering today.
 
...got put on my 3rd antibiotic, and Dr. told me to 'hope it works'. Im hoping it works!.....UPDATE 3/8-- Unfortunately the antibiotic has failed. If u are fighting a persistent infection, know that u are not alone!!!!

The infection is still there in the gum, and the surgeon indicated the only option left is to open the area up and try to find the source. He also remarked about how incredibly slow the extraction site is healing. It is frightening, but not because of the dentistry, because of the nature of the problem. The dental work, although sometimes uncomfortable, is there to help us, so if I can say anything PLEASE DO NOT hesitate to acquire dental treatment. If u cannot bring yourself to go, talk to a loved one about it and have them go with you. Although I didnt let this go, I cannot imagine what it would be if I had. Thank you dental professionals for being there to help us.. Good luck to all of us!;)
