Dental Appointment this Wednesday....

I'm not so much scared as I am nervous. I have to have a very large cavity filled in my right central incisor and the dentist said that all he will do drill it and fill it. No root canal, no extraction. I hope it goes well.

Here is the cavity in case anyone was wondering.

I am sure all will go fine. I had a cavity years ago, same exact tooth. Dentist filled it, and that was the end of that. Years later I had veneers done, and had no problem. Try not to worry, it will all be OK

I also have three small cavities the dentist couldn't even see so hopefully I only have to have this tooth filled and repaired.

Are my teeth going to get cleaned before or after the filling?

They clean before filling! I'm starting 9 fillings today, and had 2 cleaning appointments before the fillings started.

I only have the one cavity so I probably only need the one cleaning. My dad's going to be sitting with me while tooth is getting fixed. It'll help lessen my anxiety.

Everything will go smoothly for you, try not to worry

The anxiety beforehand is always ridiculous, and then once the appointment is over you're like "wait, that was it?"...it's not NEARLY as bad as you're fearing.

I'm going to go the headphone route for my fillings! I listen to a few different talk radio shows, I'm gonna put one of those bad boys on before it starts so I have something to occupy my mind while the dentist works. That + numbing = A okay. With one filling you'll be in and out within the hour!

As far as being as precise as a single tooth, I'm not positive. I have a number of cavities and they tend to work per mouth quadrant. So I had a few filled at the same time.

But I also had a good 8 shots total all along one side of my mouth. If they're working on one, the number of shots is going to go down significantly. I'd prepare for 2 (in front of the tooth and behind it on the roof of your mouth), but it could be more. I haven't been in a long time until recently and haven't had the experience of having one filling at a time since I was a kid.

Don't worry about it! I'm telling you, once you get the shots done you'll be like "really? I was worried about this?" It's nothing.

You won't feel anything, but if you do tell your dentist immediately. After I had all my shots and the dentist got to drilling, he kept asking if I was okay. I guess I was making a weird face, the smell of drilled tooth isn't pleasant but I didn't feel a damn thing. I was worried the numbness would wear off too quickly. Not the case. I was numb at work for hours after I left the dentist. I bought a soda at work but couldn't drink it for a while for fear of everything dribbling out of the corner of my numb mouth lol

I'm still nervous but less scared than before. The dentist that saw me at the intake appointment had a calming presence and was a very nice man.

It's also raining and that has a calming presence as well.

It's Wednesday! Did you have your appointment? How did it go? I'm glad you were calmed by the dentist and the rain. Anything to lower anxiety levels is a positive thing.

All they did was clean my teeth. My filling will be done at the end of July. I have a different dentist (Dr. Looney) and not the one who inspected my teeth the first time. Apparently Dr. Looney does a great job at explaining things. I found out that they numb just the tooth that is going to be drilled and filled, no lingering numbness elsewhere so that eases lingering anxiety.

UPDATE: I finally had one of the two cavities that needed to taken care fixed today. It didn't go horribly wrong as I thought it would. I was numbed up before the lidocaine was injected and the dentist went in slowly when he gave me the shot. Apparently I'm a good patient because I actually remained calm through-out the procedure. I do have to go back at the end of October to get the other cavity filled but it's not as bad as the one that NEEDED to be fixed.
