Drinking through a straw...safe?

I'm getting a number of teeth removed, and the oral surgeon I saw said that there is no danger in drinking out of straws (and even encourages it) and said it is safe to use mouthwash a day after extraction. This contradicts what I read most places, and heard from other oral surgeons others went to.

My worst fear, like many, is doing anything that will encourage a dry socket (like I thought straw drinking would). Now I'm not sure what I can do to prevent it, though my oral surgeon seemed certain and has a lot of experience. Any other opinions on this, or advice? I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing. :(

That doesn't sound right. I always heard no drinking out of straws after extractions for at least a few days, if not longer

That was my impression as well. However, he said this recommendation was based off of years of experience that showed it didn't do any harm and helped get liquids down. I read one other blog online (can't find it now) that said it was indeed a myth and safe to do so. But I'm not sure...

Mine told me not to use one for a couple days.
