hi , this is my first time here, only found forum through sheer desperation!!! hope im okay to be on here as my main phobia is not a dental phobia but i have a phobia of vomitting which makes me frightened of dentistry but for a different reason, and actually the last few experieinces i have had have given me a strong fear of dentist as well, some would probably say a phobia but i can only say its not as strong as my other phobia.. sorry for ramble goin g quitely mad due to lack of sleep for weeks..

any way a brief dental history!!! please i need some advisesorry now to bore you but im really desperate and scared so here goes.

well last year at the age of 39 i had to have all of my top teeth removed and all but 6 of bottom teeth, due to constant nausea and sucking of polos 24/7 and fear of dentist .. wont pretend it was pleasant , i was sedated, and then had to have lots of stitches, but for me the worst part at the time wasnt the pain it was on waking because of the numbness i was heaving really badly for ages, i was panicking and b/p dropped really low, then few days later got dry socket infection as well so that was bad...

but then few months later had bad infection in two of the remaining teeth (they were supposed to have removed all of them i dont know why they didnt) so back to the dentist with great amount of fear and must have been unlucky because he gave me so many injections even though i was telling him they werent numbing the pain, in the end i was screaming but he carried on and finally pulled the two teeth out and again i was left heaving and b/p shot down really low - so another lovely experieince.

all had been okay - well apart from not being able to get on with the dentures and only wearing them out, not being able to eat with them ect ect..
but 5 weeks ago the remaining teeth started playing up, i have been in agony all in my jaw, ear, under chin on and off for 5 weeks, sleepless night , wailing swearing all in all a joy to be around!!

went to the dentis two weeks ago (this time another dentist!) who assured me he understood my phobia and i have to say he was good in that sense he took ages giving me injections only around the teeth (these are lower teeth at the front) making me feel safe that my mouth /tongue wouldnt go numb because thats what caused me to heave and panic - he had x/rayed and told me that the four teeth were infectd down the root and into the bone but that wasnt a suprise to me any way BUT he assured me the injections to just the gums would be okay, i was in there for 1hour 40 mins and the first tooth came out okay, pain but bearable, but when he started on the last three the pain was agony, never before have i had anything like it not even childbirth that i had with no pain relief, he kept on injecting more and more around the teeth and into the must have at least 20 just one after another, but they werent coming put and the pain was like i was shotting through the roof...
in the end we had to stop, i had just wanted them out at that stage but it kept on getting to the point where the pain just wasnt bearable and then he would stoip and inject more, but nothing was taking the pain away...

any way 10 days later and a corse of antibiotics and the pain is still there (well not the same intense agony ) but bad and im not sleeping and am generally not nice to be around, nurofen arent working and im to scared to take anything else because of my vomitting phobia (side effects scare me)paracetomol dont stop the pain either... mouthwashes, clove oil, nothing is stopping this dam pain.

i have to wait until the 15th august as dentist is on holiday and cant go elsewhere because at least he understands my phobia,, but how to stop this pain any ideas???
and also why was i in agony when he tried to take them out? i cannot have the pain block that affects my tongue and under my chin as my vomitting phobia is worse then my dental phobia, im really lost here and getting down and desperate ..

any advise would be really really appreciated and again sorry this has been so long, at the moment the pain is throbbing all along jaw and in ear so shortly know i will be wailing again shortly aarrgh..

thank you for reading

Hi Sleepy and  [smiley=welcome.gif],

I'm sorry to hear about the pain you are in and the problems you recently had with the teeth removal attempt.  I know that there are a few others on here who suffer from emetophobia, perhaps they will have some advice from that end.  I can tell you that I have heard that having a bad infection can affect the effects of the anaesthesia and because you are unable to have injections in areas that may numb your tongue or chin that may have contributed.  I'm glad to hear the dentist was respectful of your desire to stop and resume at another time.  I hope that he will be able to offer suggestions to make things better the second time around.

I feel badly that I can't offer you any suggestions for pain.  I'm sure there are some wonderful painkillers that would be of benefit but with the fear of vomiting I'm sure that's limiting.  Could you ask your gp if there is anything you could take that does not have nausea as a side effect?  Also, if you haven't already, why don't you ask Gordon or Pars in the dental questions answered forum?  They may be able to give you some suggestions to help get you through the next two weeks.

I do hope that you are able to find some relief and eventually have the offending teeth removed so you can be pain free.  Please let us know how you are doing!

Take care,

Pam

Hey, sleepy. :)

I, too, have emetophobia, but I'm sorry, I can't make any suggestions as to what else you can take because I've never had to take anything for pain. I suggest heading on over to the emetophobia boards; I'm sure someone there will be able to help. :) I think the address is emetophobia.org. If you have an LJ (livejournal.com) you can also join the emetophobia community there. I don't know anything about medications, so it may not be possible to mix the two, but have you heard of Phenergan? I know a lot of people take it to deal with nausea and such. Heh, I actually just did a search for it because I didn't know how to spell it and found this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promethazine Apparently it helps with pain!

Good luck. Please let us know how you get on. :)
