Depends on what you need done, who does it and where you have it done. Also what type of payor system-NHS? dental insurance? out of pocket? Yes it can get expensive, but there are always alternatives. The goal should be the most functional and healthy that is aesthetically pleasing.

The NHS doesn't do cosmetic dentistry apart from orthodontics for the worst (least cosmetic) cases.

Cosmetic dentistry can vary from at home bleaching with store purchased strips to multiple venneers. Some people may also include full mouth reconstruction but here I would say we are talking about very complex dentistry mainly aimed at full function and health and not just cosmetics.
Regarding venners the price will vary will the quality commitment and the number of teeth that are treated. The life span of veneers is rather long so the yearly cost is not as high. When compared to medical procedures for cosmetics then venneers provide a high value.
