protruding bone?

Hi, Had extraction of lower left 7 (Molar) about 3 weeks ago However there is a piece of white bone protruding through gum on tongue side below the extraction site (which is now, thankfully, healing up). Its quite sharp and doesnt feel loose or mobile could it be part of my jaw?? probably a stupid question but I'm quite worried. If it was a bit of loose tooth it should move but nope its solid. Got appt on monday to see my dentist but would appreciate some advice maybe Oz or Gordon could advise on what its likely to be and what can be done with it? in anticipation........

You're right, it's part of your jaw bone. Sometimes a wee sharp edge is left protruding after an extraction and as the gum grows back over it, then it cuts through. It will eventually just break away or your dentist can remove it in about 10s. No big deal.

thanks for the reply. How will the dentist remove this piece of jaw and more to the point will it hurt! Should I be given a local or something its very very sore at present and quite large (appx half or qurter inch long)

Hi Dave...I believe what Gordon is referring to is a Bone Spicula, basically a bone sliver. I have had a few of them after extractions. Some come out on there own, but if it is bothering you, the dentist can remove it. He will numb the area and simply nudge the piece of bone out. It will not bother you anymore

just back from dentist its apparently the edge of the socket thats protruding. Dentist advised salt water rinses and says in time it will heal over. best of all NO CHARGE! and NO PAIN.
