Hi there,

This is my first post, but I have been lurking for a while (and I must say this forum is truly a wonderful source of inspiration for a dental phobic like me. )

I went to the dentist 3 weeks ago. It was my first visit in 12 years (im 29). I was terrified to say the least, but the dentist I choose is good with phobic patients...plus I really had to go because I had lost an old filling on a upper molar and also broke a little bit of that tooth.

She filled that deep cavity that I had and said she could not promise I wouldnt I need a RCT. 3 days lated, i was feeling pain around that tooth so I went to her office and she gave me some penicilin and an appointement for a RCT.

When I did go for the RCT, she couldnt get me numb enought to proceed. Since I was still in pain (after 1 week on antibiotics), she gave me clindamicyn and told me to come back in 1 week for the RCT.

Guess what?? IM STILL IN PAIN!
Why is it that those antibiotics wont work on me? I am terrified to get the RCT without being correctly numbed since the infection is still there, but I cant stand the pain anymore.

The tooth itself doesnt really hurt.. I feel a deeper pain, like above the gum where the skin meets the cheekbone. Its driving me crazy.

Is it possible that Im taking all these antibiotics for nothing? Could my pain come from something else, not an infection? (she couldnt see the infection on XRAYS)...

Im totally desesperate, dont know what to do. I cant get the RCT if im in pain because I cant get properly numbed, and the pain wont go away without the RCT.

Whats going on? What should I do?

BTW excuse my poor english, im a frenchspeaking canadian ;)

Hi there,

No wonder you are worried. This situation can sometimes arise as you have descibed. Hopefully, although you are still in pain the antibiotics will have calmed things enough for the local anaesthetic to take full effect.
In these situations it is often helpful to take a good dose of ibuprofen on the morning of you next appointment (assuming there a no medial reasons why you cannot take ibuprofen - best to check with you dentist or pharmacist).

It does sound like it its your tooth causing the problem but mention you concerns to the dentist.

Good luck

Thank you so much for your reply.

My appointment is on wednesday. I am feeling better (If i wasnt completely stressed out about the upcoming RCT, I would be abl to get some sleep...pain is not keeping me awake anymore) but I can still feel some kind of soreness/slight pain in the cheek/jaw area.

Do you think there is a chance I will be able to get numb?
How common is it that an infected tooth cant get numb? Arent there different anesthesia techniques that she could try?
What am I suppose to do if she cant numb me? Go for deep sedation ? i dont want to stay on antibiotics for another week. Its really making me nauseous.

I will definetly take a good dose of ibuprofen tomorrow! Thanks for the advice!
