Being referred to Dental Hospital...dreading it...any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi,
I have a fear of the dentist and am being referred by my dentis to the dental hospital. I have pain on right hand side (bottom of mouth) that my dentist cannot find the cause of the pain. My dentist has diagnosed me with gum disease but my gums don't feel sore?

The pain started a few months after I had a tooth extracted lower right hand side.
Roll on three years and the pain is still there and not in a specific spot.
I've had xrays that does not reveal anything and hot and cold tests, taken metronizadole but nothing shifted the pain.

Here are the symptoms:
Pain is there 90 percent of the time.
I've tried over the counter painkillers and nothing stops it.
It is not a sharp pain and feels more like the pain is in the tissue rather than a tooth but seems to move about but is always in the similar area.
Is not sensitive to hot and cold.
Does not hurt when I brush or floss my teeth.

The added complication is that I have cushings syndrome and have a capillary haemangioma inside my tongue that was diagnosed in 2007 (had a tongue biopsy).

My dentist said your tongue has a lot of nerves in it so wants me to go to the hospital.

I just wanted to know what I can expect when I go? And what tests etc.... can the hospital do that my dentist can't do?

Anybody have any idea what it could be?

Thanks for reading,

David.

Sorry for your pain, just bumping you back up.

That sounds absolutely awful. When you say a Dental hospital, do you mean going to a hospital to see an oral surgeon specialist, or just going to an oral surgeons office?

Just communicate your fears to the doctor (so he will know what will work best with you) and all your symptoms. They aren't going to do anything invasive on the first visit. Anything they do with probably involve general anesthesia, which I've had and is not that bad (however, mine was in an oral surgeon's office, not in a dental hospital setting and I do not know your specific dental fears). Take a deep breath and just see what the doctor says.

It is a dental hospital that has lots of different specialists working there. The lump inside my tongue is midline tongue lesion and when I had the original scan it was 3cms.
The ENT Doctor did say at the time that if they did need to remove it I would have to undergo major surgery.
the tongue biopsy revealed no evidence of malignancy and it was a capillary haemangioma.
Had the scan in Jan 2007.

Hi I have been treated at a dental hospital and I found them to be very good and made sure I was informed and happy with what they were doing. They were very caring and considerate and went out of their way to deal with my fear and nerves.

They can do everything and more than your dentist can do so don't worry. Explain your fears and write questions down before you go because if you are anything like me you will forget everything as soon as you get there.

All the best to you, let us know how you get on please

Yes, write down all your questions, especially about aftercare and recovery. Bring a patient friend too.

My appointment is tomorrow afternoon and dreading it. Fear of the unknown really. What can they do that my dentist can't do?

I hope it went well for you at the hospital. Sorry to have missed wishing you good luck before you went. I hope you can update us on how it went.

Yeah I hope it went well. Just make sure you get lots of rest. Take lots of naps!

I also dread going to the dentists or in your case, to the dental hospital, thus the reason why we're here in this forum, the fear of dentists, but there will be times that we have to face our biggest fears. Just like when I had my teeth treated at Dental Studio 101 here in Scottsdale, AZ, after years of bearing with all the pain but they have done a great job so that somehow gave me courage to take more visits to the dentist. With that being said, I hope you have mustered the strength and the will to go the dental hospital.
