Hello, I've been a member of these forums before, but haven't been to the dentist in a few years and need some more help for a worried mind.

Today I went in because I had a cavity, and that was fine, all done. But he asked me to go back in two weeks to remove one of two broken teeth I have. That's where the fear set in.

One of my teeth has about 2mm of tooth sticking out from the gumline, and has some soft tissue in the middle. The other tooth is just barely visible above the gumline. What are the chances he'll need to cut open my gums to remove either of the teeth? If he does need to, how bad is the recovery/experience?
Also, before I left they told me to eat a decent lunch before I come in. Why did they tell me this? They're not going to put me under, are they? I assume he would have told me today if that was going to happen, right? I'm so terrified of going under that I would probably refuse it.

Thanks for any responses, guys, everyone here is awesome x infinity.

If they were going to put you under I don't think they would have told you to eat lunch as you normally have to fast for 6hours before an anaesthetic?

Hey there,

I too have two broken teeth that have broken off at the gum line and because of being such a dental pheobic
just left it and left it now the teeth are badly decaying, i have read many posts about tooth extractions on here
and to be totally honest im feeling much better about it cos i have been working myself up something rotten, but everyone whom have had it done on here have said they wish that they had done it sooner it was painless, quick and simple :):)
i would guess they will have to cut the gum which is what im going to have to have done too..... try not too worry look up the posts on tooth extraction on here everyones saying its not as bad as it seems

good luck private message me if u want any support and stuff im more than happy

Jo x

This is what I thought as well. Thanks!

He wanted you to eat a good lunch so you wouldn't get all dizzy from the procedure.

I understand from the dentists on here that removing broken-to-the-gum teeth is easier than removing complete ones. Not sure why this is, but apparently it's so.

I promise, promise, promise that this whole thing will be about a million times easier than you think it'll be. Honest. And the relief you'll feel once it's done is a wonderful feeling.

Good luck :)

Really? I wonder why that would be! Even if my tooth is broken like right at the gumline?

I do love my dentist, and I trust him, so I know the process will be as easy as it can be. I'm mostly scared of the after-effects, the soreness, etc. I am so proud of how far I've come this far, I can't wait to get this done as well!

Here you go -

Oh and I've had 2 'broken at the gum' - yes right at the gum - teeth extracted easily and without any cutting or stitches.

Cheers :)

Hi bennybear just thought I'd :poppingin: with my 'bit'. I am having teeth extracted in the next couple of weeks, and one of these is broken at the gumline. I am having iv sedation, and have been told to eat something, although not heavy or fatty, as I will be sore and probably won't want/be able to eat anything substantial for a bit.

Also, have you not been given a written treatment plan, as this would have detailed everything that you would have agreed to have done. Are you in the UK and seeing an NHS dentist? If so, then that may be different. My dentist has given me the 'low down' on treatment and costs so I know exactly what to expect from every aspect.

I hope it all goes well for you, and am sure you will be fine 8-)

Thank you @coolin! I didn't realize I was asking something that is so commonly asked - Apologies!

I really worry because in the middle of the tooth is a chunk of skin or gums and it has feeling in it, and so I didn't know if they'd have to extract that as well in order to get the bottom of the tooth out. I will ask him tomorrow. I can't believe the appointment is tomorrow, I'm so excited to get it over with, but so nervous!

I was also told to eat something, but I am not getting iv sedation (or I wasn't told I was.) I have diazepam to take before the appointment, which will help significantly. I am in Canada, and am paying for it all myself. I have to stagger the appointments as I can afford them, and as such I only ask my dentist what the next appointment or treatment will cost.

Thank you, it's tomorrow!

Check in once you're done and online again! So excited for you - this time tomorrow, it will be behind you!!

Good luck for today - I hope it goes well.

I am having my treatment done privately, but I have still been given a complete treatment plan in writing stating exactly what will be done and the costs involved. Maybe things are different in Canada, but if you can, ask for all of your treatment to be given to you in a plan. Then at least you know what is what, and you can still get it done and pay for it as you go along?

At this point it doesn't really matter, I only have one more extraction on the other side of my mouth and then I'm done (until these two teeth that have just appeared start to come down, but that won't be for a while yet.) And I know exactly how much today's extraction and the next one will cost. :) Thank you for the advice though! And I will be sure to check in in a few hours when I am all done!

ALL DONE!!! That was -so- much easier than I thought it was going to be. (I mean you guys did warn me, but I was still nervous as heck.)
I'm going to post a story in success stories right now if anybody would like to hear the details.

It would be brilliant if you could post your story in the Success Stories section 8-) - so many people here have said that it was reading the success stories which gave them the courage to see a dentist or to go ahead with dental work. So yeah, it would be great if you could write about your experience, so that others know what to expect :).

And - congratulations :welldone:!!!

done! Posted a big long story :D

Thanks so much [smiley=jumping.gif]!! (and very well-written it was, too :thankyou:)

Thank you! I'm so glad I finally got to share my success story on here, I didn't feel it was appropriate until the end. :)
