Im 18 and im getting my wisdom teeth out tomorrow morning. I have had horrible health anxiety for as long as I can remember and google to the point of terrifying myself. I'm scared of not waking up after being put to sleep for the procedure, and basically being out in general. Also I haven't eaten much so I'm starving and can't sleep because I'm freaking out and can't eat because its after midnight the day before. I have to get all four teeth removed, 3 are impacted. the pain doesn't scare me though its more like; what if they drop a tool down my throat and I choke and die? or don't wake up? or don't know whats going on? or what if I become sick and throwing up causes an infection? or they screw up a nerve and can't move my mouth again normally or feel it? or worse? have a reaction to the sedation? die bc of that? the painkillers make me sick? those are my concerns. Thanks to anyone who reads my rambling this is such a good website. if anyone has any advice to relax/ stories that aren't scary and like anything helpful pls share

sosidk,

Have you had your surgery yet? I hope it went well for you if so.. going under anesthesia is hard , mostly the thought of it .. i just did a few weeks ago for a different procedure and had myself very stressed and worried and worked up.. I went in and they put me to ease , were pros and I walked out like nothing happened.. little post op care .. I hope it all went well/goes well.. There is so much amazing technology and medical care now adays but it doesn't mean its not scary or stressful... let us know how you are..

I am just now seeing this, so you must have had your surgery. I hope it went well. Just from experience, I can tell you that even if some of your fears come true, it won't be as bad as you imagine.
I had all four wisdom teeth out at 18. All were impacted, so I had stitches.

I had most of the worst case scenarios happen: reaction to the anesthesia and woke up during surgery (thankfully couldn't feel anything), took 2 hours to wake up afterwards due to the reaction, had an adverse reaction to the antibiotic and vomited repeatedly, and had dry socket. It still wasn't as bad as I had imagined. I did not have an infection afterwards, and even the dry socket wasn't nearly as bad as what you read about on the internet. It was quickly and easily fixed. The recovery took about a week, even with all the complications.

You will be fine! It will not be as bad as you have imagined.

I'll also chime in and add that it would not be as bad as you've imagined. I had my 4 wisdom teeth taken out under general anaesthesia as well. 2 of them were impacted. I too had alot of anxiety and pretty much the same worries you had leading up until going into the OT. But the procedure went well, it was over under 30mins, I woke up 15mins after my surgery ended. I slept very well and didn't have much pain nor swelling after.

One thing I'll like to add though is that not googling helps immensely. I have health anxiety too and googling only make my anxiety worse.
