Hello Everyone
Despite not having "good" teeth, ive had a minimal amount of work done in my life (thankfully).
I wanted to ask people with knowledge, how much diet and lifestyle factors play in tooth condition vs "looking after them" by brushing, flossing, cleaning etc
For context:
1) I have never really flossed. Ive used tepe brushes on and off a little bit, but not in a sensible routine really
2) I do brush most days twice a day. If i get really tired at night though i end up sleeping without brushing, but most days it will be twice a day
3) Ive had my teeth cleaned on and off now and again....they still look rubbish and discoloured. Do NOT want them to be whiter just for vanity
4) I use an Oral B IO electric toothbrush
5) My gums do not bleed at all when brushing. Only at times when i use a Tepe
Diet and Lifestyle:
4) I do not drink any tea, coffee or alcohol at all. Or fruit juices. Only drinks i drink are sugar free pop, and water
5) I do not tend to snack on chocolate, it is more savoury food if anything. I eat 1 chocolate bar per day with lunch but rarely more than that
6) I do not eat sweets regularly. Almost never hard boiled sweets. Occasionally things like wine gums or fruit pastels, but rare
7) I do not smoke and never have. Or vape
8) I play golf excessively, every possible day if i can. I am of a high standard
My body/genetically/random stuff
9) I produce tons of saliva at night....no idea why or whether it has an effect
10) I can get heartburn at night.... but not acid reflux
11) My mother has better teeth than my father.
12) Im 6ft1 and weigh 14.5 stones
13) I went to the dentist regularly as a child up to the age of 13-14. Never had anything done except teeth cleaning.
14) As an adult, didnt go to the dentist from 14 to about late 20s, when they discovered no cavities but told me i had to have two molars extracted. Hugely negative experiences I didnt want to ever repeat
15) Didnt go again for probably 5 years after that, where they put some cement stuff in a notchy part of a gum. Did not like it at all despite thankfully not being injected. They said it was not gum recession but id worn some of the tooth away brushing where they did it
16) Started going for appointments again 18 months ago but started cancelling them as I dont like them. Had 3 appointments, 2 were checkups, one was for two fillings which i struggled immensely with. Got cleaned twice. Since then decided im not going back for a good while as its a very negative experience having anything dental related done.
How much effect is each part of life having in overall tooth health?
