Hi, first off want to say I really enjoyed reading you're journey all contained in this thread. It's a rare treat to see. When I quit smoking a youtube channel called vaping with vic encouraged me because it was his journey from day 1 to a year forward. So thanks for keeping us all updated. Anyways the composite fillings don't whiten so you will have to have them redone. I'll be getting partials but I would rather pay the dentist that amount vs wasting money on over the counter stuff. You know you will be getting the best possible result.

Thanks for that! I have been doing some reading up on whitening and as you said, once done I'd have to have all the fillings replaced and to be honest that would be a hell of a lot of work once again.

I have my appointment tomorrow morning and I can't wait as I have been in agony all week. I can't work out if the pain is coming from the new fillings, my temporary ones on the same side or the tooth that needs the root canal on the same side. The only thing easing it is weirdly putting toothpaste that side of my mouth and sitting with it for a good ten minutes or so. It gets rid of the pain for an hour or so but then it's back. I just hope the dentist can work out which is causing the problem as I am miserable at the moment!

Well, today has officially sucked! I now need three root canals and I have to go back on thursday for two more fillings. Not going to lie, having the root filled temporarily on my bottom left side hurt like a cow, I nearly told her to just take it out altogether and at the moment I am considering that option.

I don't really know whether to persevere with long term treatments, temporary fillings, root canals etc or have my teeth taken out. My family think it's best for me to save my teeth, I guess I see having dentures as the 'easy' option in comparison to what I've got to have done but then I have read how nightmarish dentures can be.

Plus, I am only 29 so it feels way too early for dentures. I really don't know what to do.

Hey there, I realise that it seems like an uphill struggle to have to face a lot more work but I would say that keeping hold of your own teeth is best in the long run if at all possible.

I'm sure it will be worth it in the end, hang in there - you've come such a long way already.

Thanks, I should persevere! I am totally confused right now though, this morning I was meant to have a filling, the dentist said the decay had gone into the root so I needed a root canal and she proceeded to put a temp filling in that tooth (which hurt like a cow as the decay was a long way down). So does this mean I have actually had a root canal?

I know I will have to have them all redone but at least I know what to expect if I have indeed had a root canal.

Dental work (even deep fillings and root canals) should be done without pain. If your dentist cannot do this then you should find a new dentist. I've had countless fillings and 4 root canals and have never had pain.

In fairness, it's not her fault as when she was drilling it was fine. I don't think she realised how deep the decay went so when she started to fill and had to go deeper it was too late to give another injection and even though it was uncomfortable, it's done. She gave me a tonne of novocaine afterwards and I had a good 6 hours numb and pain free so I can't complain. My last root canal I had zero pain with her, this one is a little infected and swollen so I guess that might be why.

It's never 'too late' to give more anesthetic. Everyone is different, but I would not have tolerated that.

I do have a very high pain tolerance, next time I'll be making sure she really gives me loads so I don't feel anything. I'm quite quiet, if I am in pain I normally just breathe through it rather than yell or scream.

I have been in absolute agony all night and day today. It's definitely nerve pain but I still can't narrow down which tooth it is, it's so bad I am tempted to ask the dentist to take out the 5 remaining teeth on my left side just to be done with it. Now the root filling was painful when it was being done so I am assuming the pain is coming from that tooth, she's put an antibiotic thing in along with the semi permanent filling, is it possible the nerve is just too damaged/rotten to save hence the pain?

If you had a root canal on the tooth you should not have nerve pain any longer. If the root canal was not completed, I suppose you could still have pain.

I had awful pain after a root canal once. It turned out that, in addition to needing the root canal, I had some gum recession on the tooth next to it. That was fixed when the dentist put some coating (Gluma) on that tooth. I've been fine ever since. The dentist should test each tooth to figure out where the pain is coming from.

So sorry you're in so much pain!

Went back today and had two fillings, she examined the two teeth I think I have the pain narrowed down to and I jumped when she touched them. I've been given antibiotics as she believes there is an infection, it was that or remove the teeth straight away. I decided to try and save them, she gave me an anaesthetic injection in those teeth but weirdly, whilst the pain disappeared from those teeth it moved to the upper teeth so now I am totally confused as to whether I have the right teeth causing the pain.

Anyway, I got home at about 3ish and within an hour and a half I was in absolute agony again, this time the pain spanning from those two teeth right back to the back of my mouth where I now have no teeth whatsoever! I called and am booked in at 8 in the morning, I am planning on having the two teeth removed but am terrified that won't stop the pain. I guess I am going to have to go ahead with the removals and just hope!

Another update! About 3ish this morning the pain began to subside somewhat, enough for me to finally get to sleep. I cancelled my appointment, I am going to give the antibiotics a good go and hope they continue to ease the pain.

Hi hun! How are you getting on now? I have been following your story and truly hope that everything has worked out great for you and you had a lovely festive season with a sparkly smile! x

Well happy new year everyone! Onwards my dental journey continues! Just before Xmas one of my temporary fillings broke, when the dentist saw me she said there was so little tooth left to save and seeing as this was the second time this filling had failed she recommended I have it extracted as if it broke again over Xmas I could have been in agony with nowhere to go. That gives me a total of 9 extractions before the age of 30 which I am ASHAMED of to say the least.

Couple of days another one of my temporary fillings broke, just a teeny bit. I was booked in today for a check up but had some filling put in that tooth for the time being as it will need a root canal. Also had x rays done and the filling I had in my back tooth on the left a hole has formed underneath that filling and that tooth also needs a root canal. I currently have temporary fillings in two teeth which I had done a while ago and the dentist put medication in the roots of those teeth as those teeth also need root canals.

I am back on friday to have one root canal done and I am absolutely TERRIFIED. My brain is trying to talk me out of going but I know I have to suck it up and be brave, the dentist assures me the worst is over as extractions are the worst thing to go through and she's told me if I feel any pain at any time she will stop and give me more anaesthetic and I do trust her and believe her. Every time I've had a bit of pain she has stopped and waited, I think I am making the root canals worse than they are in my own mind, just as I did with the extractions.

See, I thought the root canals had been done but actually the roots have just been medicated, I did feel pain with my bottom right tooth when the medication was being packed in but that tooth was very infected and now it has calmed down. I just hope everything goes okay!

I can't believe it has been 11 months since my last visit! I promised myself I would keep this thread updated in the hopes that perhaps others in a similar situation would find some sort of strength of sorts by reading about the work I've had done but life has kind of got in the way so I apologise!

Going back to my last post where I mentioned about having a root canal done, when I went the following week the first root canal took so little time that my dentist asked if I would like to have the root canal done in my back tooth as well and I said 'Yes please!'. I had to have antibiotics for the back molar as a little infection had taken hold, I still have a temporary filling on that tooth but it has been absolutely fine, it's set to be crowned the next time I go back unless I have any issues with it. The other tooth that had the root canal was absolutely fine and I went back a week later to have my crown fitted, I expected it to feel really alien and weird but after a day I did not notice that I even had a crown in place.

I had totally built up such a terrifying image of what a root canal would be like and in all honesty the worst bit for me was the disinfectant stuff they used, I had no pain and in all fairness to my dentist she made quick work of the two root canals and I was out of the chair in just under an hour which I was totally shocked by. Luckily for me it seems I have hit the jackpot with this dentist as she is so lovely and patient, constantly checking that I am okay and giving me breaks every now and then if I am having a lot of work done.

Basically, I have gone from literally shaking and needing diazepam on my first visit to walking in and actually not having a care in the world about being in the chair because it does not frighten me anymore! I never, ever, ever thought I would be in this position and whilst I am horrified at how badly I let my teeth get and how much I lost, I am MORE angry at the horrible dentist who terrified me in the first place and I really wish I had made a complaint about him because I dread to think of anyone else suffering at his hands.

I cannot even remember his name but he was a fairly young guy when I saw him about 13 years ago, I would say he's only in his late 30's now so he is going to be working for a very long time and I could kick my 17yo self for not getting his name but it's far too late now. Part of the issue I think was that when the practice changed hands as my old dentist retired, the new owners decided to allow NHS (National Health Service which is like a socialised medical system for people not from the UK) that were on the old dentist's books but they would not accept any new NHS patients and would only take on people privately.

I got the impression that the NHS patients weren't highly thought of and the practice saw us as taking up space on their books which could be used for private patients to come in and pay through the nose for work. My current dentist is very posh to say the least, they do a lot of cosmetic dentistry and offer botox and fillers BUT never have I felt that I was being rushed in and then rushed out or treated badly because I wasn't in a position to pay and that's from the dentists right down to the reception staff who all know my name now and greet me like a pal as I walk in!

Just in case anyone is reading this from Wales the practice is called Chapel Street Dental in Mumbles and if you have a fear I would 100 percent recommend this place as they have literally changed my life! Merry Xmas to one and all, I promise I will keep this updated next year, it's my NY resolution! :)

Thank you for your posts
I've not had proper dental treatment since 15 years ago only emergency teeth pulled as my phobia is bad
But now I've git my last wisdom tooth aching with earache
Plus my front teeth are decayed and guns receded that I'm scared I may lose them
I've ibs d with anxiety makes it trigger and I'm constantly needing the toilet so getting into the dentists is awful for me
I notice your in the UK how much did all this cost you as NHS funding is very low ?

I have made an appointment but have to wait 6 weeks I'm really scared as I know I'll need loads treatment and hate myself for having a phobia of dentists

I had one as a child who shouted at us then I had bed root canal treatment where I had 4 roots instead 3 dentist hadnt xrayed me and didn't numb the 4th root so I felt everything

x

Amazing story. So it's now been 1 year and a half since your journey began. How would you say your teeth are now? Do you have a great smile? Does it look natural, etc?
