Well I am 21 and when I was younger didn't look after my teeth stupidly and by the time I learned my lesson at the age of about 13 I was to scared of going to the dentist because of the nasty remarks I would get from the dentist. My teeth have been through hell of a lot since then as I had smoked for 7 years (and quit this past year) and I had a breakdown and not only started to neglect my teeth (brushing only once a day) I ate copious amounts of junk, I am getting so much better and have beat depression really but now I am living with the affects of these stupid decisions.

My fear grew from a bad experience - The dentist couldn't numb my one tooth properly and the filling needed to be drilled in slightly I think so I had to endure about a second of severe pain and because I had to have quite a bit of work done in the first place then that just topped it all off really.

Anyway sorry for the life story , I was just wondering because I have an appointment for tomorrow If anyone could give me some much needed tips to relax me

Firstly well done for quitting !! It's not easy (I know).

Secondly it's great that you've made an appointment. It won't be as bad as you think. At your age it's unlikely anything really bad will have happened. Nothing hurts anymore at the dentist. The worst thing is having to keep your mouth open for so long!

I've had depression too and know how difficult it can be to do the unpleasant but necessary things when you're already feeling low. But if sounds like you're getting better and getting things back on track which is great. Good luck!

its unlikely they'll do much at the first appointment except have a look but in case they do take your iPod wth your favourite music and close your eyes and imagine you're somewhere else.

Hi Chris

:welcome: To the forum

That's pretty amazing, booking your first appointment, well done you! :jump::jump: It's probably the most difficult step to take. It's great that you have made the decision to go and get things sorted and at your age it's also unlikely that things are going to need too much, here's hoping.:)

Hope all goes well at your first appointment; the main thing is to find a compassionate, sympathetic dentist who you can relate to.

Good luck, Im certain you will be just fine :clover::clover: Please feel free to keep us ousted as to how you get on.

Kind Regards

Hey I also have my first appointment tomorrow im 26 and probably going to need most if not all of my teeth removed :(. I am now suffering from anxienty due to this and at a point where I hate myself for my fear of the dentist letting it go this far. Anyway well done for booking your appointment and you are not alone. I have told myself I can do this and grt my life back brfore I loose out on any more and im sure you can do it too.

hope your okay and good luck for tomorrow

Thanks guys it really means a lot my phobia was a lot worse at one point so I'm grateful I have at least got it too the point where I can at least phone them.

Sadly I needed quite a bit of work when I was 13 so surely i must need even more treatment this time around as most of fillings have come out me thinks :(

It's crazy how much not being able to smile affects you isn't it

Whatever happens imma kick this phobias butt whatever it takes

Hey bud, that's exactly the same feeling I have! I think the regret is something I just have to let go of but it's hard isn't it

Wish u the best for tomorrow as well I'm sure we will both be in a better place once we just get it done :) doesn't make it any less scary tho does it :P

Hi There

You guys are young and clearly strong to face this.........I waited until I was stupidly old lol.. 47 before I sorted mine out. I really hope everything goes well for you, you can do this.

Good luck.

Miss P

Hey, I'm sure it won't be so bad :) we all get nervous when we're sitting in the chair. At least most of us  You never know, you actually might be one of the lucky ones who go in, expecting a mouthful of cavities, and end up not having any! I definitely recommend getting lots of sleep the night before your appointment. That will help loads. Also, be sure to eat a good meal before you go to your visit, although brush and floss afterwards, and it might help to watch something funny on youtube or go looking at funny posts on Pinterest before you leave the house. Laughing releases feel-good endorphins.

Well wishes

I just wanted to add that I, too, am regretful of how long I avoided the dentist. It wasn't completely my fault that I couldn't/didn't go, but even if given the option I would have fought against going. Now that I'm finally reaching adulthood I realize the importance of forcing your fears down like bad medicine and trudging ahead so that you don't end up in dental Hell like I have ;D It's tremendously difficult to let go of the remorse we feel concerning our teeth...what I would give to have my mouth in perfect condition again...but we must find a way to do so.

I really wish we were like sharks and regenerated our teeth!

Ihatedentistss, Wow thank's for that post very informative I will definitely be following all of what you suggested I probably wouldn't have thought of half of that to keep me occupied. Thank god for the internet and it's funny cats and other funnies

And as for the regenerating teeth part, That would be amazing lol <3

Let us know how it goes and hopefully you will be pleasantly suprised with the outcome.

it definitely doesnt make it any less scary I will be a 100% mess tomorrow at work before my appointment.

Your right about the better place too. Im now trying to look towards the finish line and being happy rather then the process of it all xx:clover:

I did it :')

The dentist was so friendly!, I heard stories of not being able to have both in terms of if the receptionist and staff are nice then the dentist usually isn't but I have found my perfect dentist they are both amazing <3 :D

It went better than expected although still not great I know, I need 3 fillings on the same side of mouth and a one extraction but one or two of those fillings are just replacements of the originals anyway so that's miles better than I was expecting lol!

I am curious tho I have marks on my teeth which I thought were cavities but he hasn't mentioned anything about filling them, what's that about?:scared:

So the summary is one extraction, fillings and a hygenist in one appointment so although long it can all be done in one!

Hey that's great! It doesn't sound like you need that much done at all! Well done.

Those brown marks could just be staining from coffee/tea/wine/smoking. You'll probably find they go when they've been cleaned. You must be so relieved ?

Hey ChrisG

Well done I am soooooo pleased for you. How fantastic to get it all done in one go............good luck with you treatment.

:cheer::cheer::cheer:

Miss P

Thanks guys! If there is cavities do dentist have to fill them? It could well be from when i used to be smoking, here's hoping :)

Although it was only a checkup appointment it's crazy how much worse your head makes these scenarios
