I learned why Dentists and Hygentists can be such jerks...

I finally broke down and went to the dentist a few weeks ago. And of course, the hygentist started in on me about how much tartar had built up etc. I told him I didn't need to hear that, just do your job. And he said the most revealing thing "Well that's what you are paying me for". He actually believes that ragging on people *is his job*. Like somehow he thinks that's really going to make any difference in my behavior. That was so interesting. Particularly from a practice that advertises "will create a comfortable environment..." on their website.

You are pointing out something important: dentists are health professionals and have by the law and ethical guidelines the duty to:

1) Inform you of what is going on in your mouth and why
2) Inform you about evidence based things that help prevent problems

I do not think your dentist believed it would make a difference as you clearly indicated lack of interest. I believe it is more about doing the job properly. Not informing you would be unprofessional and negligent and most dentists would not feel comfortable with that.
