It's been 10+ years since the last time that I've been to a dentist. Every time I'd mention that to somebody, I'd feel embarrassed - so embarrassed that it made me feel even less willing to finally go.
I had been experiencing a bit of pain, and I could feel some cracks on the sides of my teeth. The pain wasn't too bad though - more of a discomfort while drinking something cold than anything. This, along with these forums, finally made me decide that it was time to go. After I read some stories where people let their teeth get so bad that they couldn't even chew their food anymore, I figured that if they could survive it, then I certainly could, as my teeth weren't nearly in that bad of a shape.
Still, I figured that there would be some work to be done. I even asked the dentist if they'd knock you out entirely while doing some work, as I took it as a given that I'd need work.
Go figure though. I didn't have any cavities and I didn't need any work. The cracks in my teeth? That's due to grinding, and I just got fitted for a mouthguard for me to wear at night. I also have to use some special toothpaste, and there are a few potential trouble spots that the dentist wants to keep his eye on. Still, he told me that my teeth looked good and that I needed to keep doing what I was doing. (I'm sure that he didn't mean that I should wait ten years until my next appointment though!)
I feel such a relief now. I've been agonizing over this for so long, and it all turned out to be for nothing. Now, you might not be as lucky as I am, but chances are it's not nearly as bad as you might think it is!
